    Well, I'm interested to hear what you think doing a good job means in trucking because as far as I know that's all there's ever been to it. I actually couldn't think of anything else, outside of maintaining your truck and being dot compliant, that would be involved in doing a good job. I have only been an owner operator with two companies, JCT and Schneider, so I'm sure I need to learn a lot but I'm certainly open to learning. I've never been exposed to the raw business side so this will all be new to me. As far as the schmoozing comment, that's just something I know about myself. I'm not that type of person. It doesn't mean I can't call somebody and enquire about business, but if it's of the more interpersonal nature, I'm just not that way. As a matter of fact, that always annoyed be at office jobs. The guys with the outgoing personalities impressing the higher ups because they are better at schmoozing than doing a good job.

    Delivering and picking up on time is a part of it, but a relatively small part. You also need to be a problem solver. You have more than likely seen the guys that show up and completely show out because something isn’t exactly the way it was presented. Or the guy that just calls dispatch and say “hey! There is a problem and you need to fix it”. You need to be able to roll with the punches with a smile on your face. If an issue arises, come up with a solution. Then called the agent and say “hey Jim. There is an issue and such and such is going on. I think this is the best way to proceed. It will cost so and so. Please get with Jill and see how she would like to proceed with this problem”

    There is a certain amount of “schmoozing” to this business. It a business built on relationships. If the agent likes you, you will benefit. If the agent doesn’t and you are hard to deal with, well good luck there. You can no longer just sit in your cab and wait on a pre plan. You need to be proactive in finding your work. You also want to be remembered by the agent with the good freight. How will you do that if you don’t try to build a personal relationship.

    Well I need to get my physical over to the BMV. I call dispatch. Hey can I deliver my second load tomorrow? No. Can I get Saturday work, No. But take care of your physical.

    Lost a bit of money. But at least I'm going into Chicagoland on Friday afternoon. The exit is the hard part. I wanted Saturday, traffic is great in the morning.
