1st get hired, don't worry about the strike, put your app in. The window of hiring inexperienced carhaulers could close at anytime.
Your training would last at least a month, that's up to you and the trainer to decide, if you don't feel ready no one says go solo. 25% quit by then.
I'm on the California board and those loads are almost always covered. You do get 3 days off if you pull one, it's your option when and where to take them during the trip.
You'd probably end up on the Open Board, which has alot of FLA, E coast, Tx, Brunswick port loads.
Equipment would be a crap shoot but it has improved alot from what it was and you're on the clock when it breaks. Equipment goes by seniority bid but once you have a bid truck it's yours until you bid another truck, there is no annual bid. When other equipment becomes available there is another bid.
Some other considerations, Dan the TM is good to work for, once he knows where you like to go he tries to put it out there. As far as drivers, it's looked down upon for a senior driver to take a junior drivers home load. But it is seniority dispatch. Hot loads are rare and if it's there, that's where you're going. BG is the only JCT terminal that contractually has 70mph trucks. Damages, there is no escrow account where they take out $2,500 from your check to cover whatever damages the company decides you caused or failed to note.
On a final note, I've been a union carhauler since 1979, I've worked for Baker Driveaway, M&G Convoy, NuCar Carriers, Leaseway, E&L Transport (aka Easy Living) and now JCT. All those companies came and went because carhaul is a volatile industry. In 1979 95% of new cars were handled by union carriers, now there are 2 companies left. Of all those companies I am most impressed by Mike Riggs who runs Jack Cooper, he keeps pulling rabbits out of the hat to keep the boat afloat, none of which were pay cuts.
The caveat to all this is the now higher interest rates, strong car sales for this long and the staggering auto loan amounts. There has not been a serious downturn since 2009. I'm just an observer, not making predictions but...
PS Whatever you hear/read about hauling used cars, POV's, auction cars, take it with a grain of salt, a big one. POV's are a nightmare of pick up and delivery times, auction cars take forever to find, inspect and load. And most companies that do that work will be finding ways to push those damage/exceptions costs down to the lowest common denominator...YOUJubal Early Times, EvertonP, warrior12345 and 2 others Thank this. -

This may sound stupid ; but since i am not familiar with bids and how seniority works; would u mind telling me how long it takes a new driver to get a nice truck ? And good lane ? What do u think the starting pay is ?.cuz i see where it says up to $1.53/mile on post from "banker " .Also is being away for two weeks a norm ?in other words can someone just be out for just one week ? What is the loading /unloading pay ? I hope u find the time to enlighten me more .stay safe out there .thanksJubal Early Times Thanks this. -
I agree. I watched 3 mins of one of those YouTube car haulers bragging about how much money he makes doing coast to coast personal vehicles , and it gave me PTSD.warrior12345 Thanks this. -
