You said you know what Owner ops at your outfit are making. You should find out what it cost them. Then add 20% to get closer to the real number

The reason I asked why do you want to do this is I always felt like people who were drawn to being owner operators solely for the money were doomed to fail. If you have no passion for trucking or anything associated with it, this is just purely based on the money, well good luck. It's just not an easy way to make money. I'm sure there are outliers but normally your most successful one truck operations are people who love trucking/trucks/chrome etc and working in trucking that's their happy place. Because very few people out there in the working world (in any industry) do something they enjoy and people who do are rare.

OK, so you state you will stay with the same co, but as an O/O. This means more expenses, insurance, fuel, etc. The question is, will you generate more $$$ , enough to pay those expenses VS. running as co drivers ? I'm not so sure you can walk into Penske and rent a truck for 6 mo. (with your min experience) How many mi you 2 running right now ? Can you run 6000/week ? Consistantly ? Collect lots of info before you do it.

We’re both in our 50s. I respect that you have more experience in this industry than I ever will. If you think this post was helpful, you’re mistaken. Perhaps you could explain what you think we will gain by waiting.

Why do we want to go owner operator?

    1. we want our own truck. When we buy, and we will, I will probably send it to ARI to get the bathroom shower modification. I already have quotes on this and understand what it does at the feet of the mattress. This is a creature comfort that will make our lives extremely better as team operators. Right now we’re showering 1 to 2 times a week because we need to keep moving and being delicate flower We like to shower every day.

    2. we like trucking together. This is something we’re going to keep doing but I don’t see you doing it past 60 years old. This gives us at most seven years to maximize our opportunities.

    3. Reasons.

I’m a grown ### man. I don’t make spur the moment decisions. I don’t make any decisions that affect our lives greatly especially financially without doing a ton of research. I was just asking if anyone on here had experience with short term leases or rentals because someone had mentioned it to me. That doesn’t mean I’m leaning that way or I’m going to do that. Honestly, I think our best option when we’re ready will be buying a used tractor with a couple hundred thousand miles of warranty left on it. But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to look at all the options so I don’t feel like an idiot who missed out on a better option later.

I appreciate the concern, I appreciate the feedback. I would also appreciate it if anyone has experience with short term, rental, or leasing could chime in on this thread.

Seems you've made up your mind even with advice going against you. Keeps us inform regardless if it works out or not. Many that have asked for advice and “FAILED”, disappeared from here due to embarrassment. You have been straightforward with your journey, hope it continues, best of luck to you both.

I won’t disappear. As long as I’m in the industry, I plan to be a part of this board and contribute however, I can.

if at the end of the day all we end up with is an HDT to pull up large RV across the country then so be it.
