I agree, That is the problem with this industry, no matter how hard we try to stay away from the cheap freight there is always someone willing to haul for less...and that just keeps the rates low.

I don't think a lot of these newer o/o's realize how much it cost to run a truck, many will just haul whatever load for what ever cheap ### rate that comes up, they should learn a little about running a business before jumping into it.

How do you know it is all newbies or new owner operators hauling cheap freight. I have been in this buisness for twenty years and I have seen guys that will haul for anything and they have been trucking longer then I have. I can go to a shipper or a truck stop and ask ten owner operators what it cost to run their truck and out of ten I bet two could give me a straight answer and out of those ten over half of them would be vetern drivers. You show you have been a trucker for two years to me that is a newbie, I been at it twenty and I still learn new things about the buisness every day so I guess I am a newbie. It don't matter how long you been in buisness some drivers just don't get it, that is why they have been trucking all their life and are in their sixties and are still broke, we have all seen them.

how can one driver get mad at another drive just because they can haul cheaper? if it really only takes $1.20 a mile for that driver to pay all his bills (home and truck) and still put $1k in savings at the end of the month, is it really his fault? or should they risk not making miles for that month because another driver says they shouldn't haul that cheap and should haul for nothing less then $2 so that driver sits for days waiting for a $2 load and instead comes up short on their miles? i'm not really grasping the concept of this whole cheap freight dilemma. I figure it would only be considered cheap if it's not worth anything for a person to move it. or am i looking at it all wrong?

I dont see how anyone can haul for these cheap rapes!
i have noticed big descrepencies in what o/ops pay in insurance.
I live in Tn an pay six hundred per month and no drivers just entering o/op status paying $148.00 pr month through Oieda but here a lot of $150.00 to $200.00 pr month when i asked why was told depends on what state you live in. I pay payments on somebody a new home or nice car every month.

BIG JOHN , you are absolutely right! I hate to admit it! for years i have been running off what i read on a forum somewere and thought well, that must be it pr mile. Well, i was allways coming up short.
Ya no! there are things in trucking i dont understand or just plain dissagree with! Heres one.
How is it Brokers want a truck owner to haul their freight for the lowest possible rate, then pay you 30-60-90 days later upon reciept of original BOL"S. No fuel advance! NOTHING. We work for cheap but put up the money and sacrifice everything, At the whims of a broker taught to be stern with a trucker while laughing about how they they got us to haul thier loads so cheap! TELLEM ITS A BACKHAUL! Funny thing is its always some ones bacKhaul, AND RATES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ARE REFLECTING THIS.
TRUCKERS! Most people think were stupid! AND WHY NOT! Im just lost as too how this happened! Maybe its allways been this way!

HERES A LINK TO FIND OUT WHAT ITS ACTUALLY COSTING YOU PR MILE TO RUN PLUS A WAGE YOU WOULD LIKE.
Cost PerMile Spreadsheet IF THIS DONT ORK ITS AT OOIDA WEBSITE.

EVERY DRIVER NEEDS TO KNOW THIS! SEEMS LIKE WEVE BEEN STUCK ON
$ 1.50 SINCE 70"S. WITH NO ACCOUNT FOR INFLATION.
Fuel is close to $3.00 gallon.
Anyway run the numbers post them and the type trailer u pull.

MY PETE IS PAID FOR BOUGHT A NEW FLATBED WANT TO MAKE ATLEAST 40 THOU THIS YEAR. MY PER MILE WAS $2.19.

Ok it makes since now that you explained it all the way.. i didn't know you were using "estimate", and "actual" as inputs. I've never been an owner operator, but plan to be in the fall, so i can't really use any actual data since i have none, so i did everything based off estimates. estimate low miles, estimate 150gal fuel tanks, estimate 5mpg and all of that is a starting point. I then thow my expenses into it which are still estimates except for the authority, 2290. Everything else is an estimate cause i do not have anything solid on it, just quotes.

the object to owning your own truck is to make a profit on top of a paycheck

running for $1.30 a mile all your doing is barely making a paycheck and you have to crank out alot of miles to do it

i'll bet 75% of the guys that don't grasp the cheap freight concept don't have enough money in the bank to survive an engine failure and will go out of business

if you think the big company's like jb and schnieder run that cheap i've got news for you...that's what many big company's and brokers want you to believe so you will work cheap

example.... i do these loads through a broker that gets them from jb (under a contract with jb hunt) using jb hunt trailers.... pickup at one place deliver/reload the next place and deliver back to the original pickup spot

for me its 288 miles total from my house (48miles to pick up) do those trips and back to my house and pays me $760 and remember 2 brokers are making money on top of that ........ alot more than your $1.30 a mile

same thing schnieder (schneider trailers) 64 mile load one way pays me $500 (203 miles total to pickup / delivery and back home again never more than 20,000 lbs)

thats how they became large profitable corperations not by running freight for $1.16 a mile

if your gonna work that cheap you might as well stay a company driver and have no worries
