You are correct that anslinger in 42 managed to federally criminalize it, and that as early as the 1910s many places in the midwest were making it illegal.

but "schedule" status was all nixon's war on drugs and the controlled substances act. Nixon himself told shafer "I want a ###### strong statement... one that just tears the ### out of" cannabis supporters. "

And who is it that enforces these things? The DEA, a body created by nixon...

Youre not seriously suggesting that Nixon had no beef with the hippies of the time? Im not citing the 94 nixon aide interview, im just looking at how everything he stood for and tried to implement (successful or not) was pretty antithetical and directly negatively affected the lives and lifestyles of the anti-war left of the time.

Maybe some of it was even a good idea, but the war on drugs, that wasnt part of it

Before 42 it was still illegal. They just used the tax code instead of criminalizing it directly. And I didn't say Nixon had no beef with the hippies. I'm just saying he didn't initiate the federal campaign against marijuana and that he's not the reason it's illegal.

I remember getting a 4 finger "lid" of pot- a fold top sandwich bag 4 fingers deep- of pot back in the early 70s for $10. Wasn't as potent as the stuff sold today but a that price it didn't need to be.
Then the Nixon administration was key in getting the Mexican government to spray Paraquat on many of the marijuana fields down there. Killed the plants pretty quick. Growers found out that if they pulled the plants immediately after they were sprayed and hung them to day they turned into the same gold color that the stuff coming up from Columbia. So all of a sudden, much of the same pot was now marketed as Colombian at greatly inflated prices. and many people bought and smoked it not realizing the poison they were inhaling.
And my days of getting a pound for $100 were gone forever.

I think the Nixon administration did come up with the idea, but they didn't actually start spraying down in Mexico until '75 when Congress bought them some helicopters. Ford was in office then. I don't remember if it was '78 or '79 when NORMAL sued to get the program stopped. The government tried to add an odoring agent to make the poisoned marijuana smell obvious so people wouldn't smoke it. But public outcry was pretty loud and I don't think Carter wasn't really that committed, so they scrapped the whole program. Then the Regan administration ordered the use of paraquat on marijuana fields in Georgia in the early 80's after it was discovered that it was being grown with the collusion of local law enforcement. Fun times.

I seem to remember paying $20 for the first lid I bought. That would have been around '75 or '76.
