Towing a car behind the bobtail

How far exactly is the shop? Are you going to the next town over? Next state? It really seems overkill. Another thing to keep in mind is you'll have to have some kind of rock guard to keep from blasting the headlights or windshield with rocks.

 

Just a quick couple of questions…..
1) Do you always break down only at home?
2) Do you always use the same shop?

 

Just thought of another question…
3) If your truck is broke down, how can you tow the car?

 

I live 4 miles from the shop I use if I'm not fixing myself. I almost bought a 4 wheeler or dirt bike that I could stage there so I wouldn't have to ask my wife, parents or neighbor for a ride home. I hate asking, especially my wife.

This YEAR? So yearly costs of $300. What's the cost of gas, insurance, and registration on top of recouping the cost of the equipment in 12 years?

 

I used to do drive away, delivering trucks, and I had a custom-made rig for towing my car (my employer was in Indiana and had a nearby Mennonite guy who did custom welding). I only ended up doing that work for a few months, and only ever used the rig to tow my car once in the five years after I quit.

Seriously, getting a tow rig for your car because you don’t like having someone drive you is… crazy, at least financially. Does you truck really have to go to the shop that often? You could rent a car and have it delivered to the shop for a lot less than the cost of getting a tow rig.

As far as that goes, you might consider just getting a tow dolly instead of actually altering your car. That’s easy to sell and get at least some of your money back.

 

Ya might have better response on a RV forum where folks are towing all kinds of stuff all the time, rather than here where folks might try to understand the logic of spending $3 or 4 grand to save $300 a year?
