When you add the broker or shipper as certificate holder they are notified when your insurance expires. If your insurance cancels prior to the renewal date, the certificate holder is notified. You won't be able to haul freight for them until your insurance is active.

That makes sense why they would want it then.

In addition, some will be asked to be added as "named insured" which is different than "certificate holder," probably cost a small fee, and affect how it pays on a claim. Be sure to ask your agent about the details.

Of the handful that have asked me for "named insured," none have refused to load me when I only issued them a certificate. I gave my agent instructions not to do either without calling first or receiving an e-mail ok from me.

Almost forgot: Grats on getting the authority and good luck!

I have also had a few brokers who wanted me to have general liability insurance. I have never gotten general liability. According to my insurance agent, I don't need general liability. It mostly protects the shipper and/or broker.

Interesting. The main reason I do have GL is that I rent parking at a small terminal with a dozen other operators. Mainly protecting myself in case someone else or their unruly kids bang their gourd on my equipment parked nearby or something. Probably unlikely, but it makes me feel better to have it.

I have a broker requesting a deposit for a dedicated lane, is that normal?

A deposit no, a rate quote most likely
