To all thinking of cdl school... do your homework! Granted I am only 3 weeks into an 8 week course, but have done my homework for the last 6 months. I am not claiming to know it all, but want to share what I have learned. Check your local community colleges first. Even if its a few hours drive. Be very leery of private schools(i.e. Roadmaster). All you are doing is paying for your cdl and not learning how to be a driver. To illustrate, here is my situation/exp. I looked in to Roadmaster in Dunn, NC where I live. Its a 4 week course for $6500 bucks! I did some homework and met some recent grads who couldn't buy a job b/c of the schools rep. I decided to attend the NC Truck Driver Training School at JCC in Smithfield, NC. Not gonna get into a sales pitch but its an amazing program. But for 8 weeks its $750! No, I didn't miss the zero. So do some homework before you get bent over. Even though we aren't out there yet, we still gotta stick together.![]()
To all wanna-be's and soon-to-be's!

I concur fully.
The college I'm going to is SLIGHTLY more expensive... by about $4,000. But it's a state run school in Minnesota. We're taxed almost as badly as California...
There is a school in Sun Prairie Wisconsin that offers a 2 week course...
I almost crapped my pants when I saw that.shriner75 Thanks this. -
Wow! 2 weeks?! Learn to drive Grand Theft Auto Style? The NCTDTS is said to be the oldest in the world, started in 1949.
-
I plan on going through our local College here, ours is 8 weeks and only 3k.
-
Community college here is 4 weeks and $2995.

How many hours per day one way do you recommend?
-
there is a guy in my class who drives about 2 hours to class, one way, every day. He gets paid mileage for it though. Through some state program or another.
-
I see. Somebody else... tax payers like me are paying for his mileage.
I suspect he is getting his training at tax payer expense as well.
I hope he gets a good job and sticks with it long enough to pay the rest of us back for covering his expenses. -
would it make you happy that $1500 of my education is being paid for by the MN taxpayer as well.
hhmm?
I would rather my tax money be spent on someone getting an education to get a job, then to have it spent on welfare and healthcare for the lazy sons of b##$% who can't be bothered to get up in the morning.otherhalftw, rayman, gixxer32404 and 2 others Thank this. -
If that $$$ gets you a job and you stay with it, I have no problem with it.
But I expect you to pay it back by being a long term tax payer moving forward.
ironhand Thanks this.
