Get a quote for parts from the Dealer using the vin/ and engine serial number, Price an inframe kit, head, injectors, bull gear, new oil pump, or just check valve/ elbow. Then call M&D distributors, price a Mahle aftermarket kit. Shop around for the head and injectors. Using Detroit reliabilt only head and injectors, bull gear and oil pump, or check valve/elbow. Find a good Shop with a flat rate. Compare. When pricing the Detroit kit, bearings are extra, Maybe $400? They also have a core charge, you need to return old bearings for refund. Aftermarket kits come with bearings. Mahle made the original pistons. They now own Clevite bearing. Good kits.

 

what would it cost to get a crate motor already rebuilt by detroit and just drop it in?
my 98 was rebuilt but it smokes on startup until it warms up apprarently because of different pistons

 

Was speaking with a Male engineer. He said aftermarket bearings are made with factory bearings. Same exact bearings.

 

I ordered one about a year and a half ago, and think it was 36k'ish IIRC. About three months later I canceled the order because they said they couldn't find parts to build it.

I ended up sourcing all the parts myself from three different dealers. I wouldn't worry about the smoke. It's not hurting anything.

I think @jamespmack suggested setting it to run in half mode when cold. That will cut smoke on a cold start quite a bit.

 

Truck Centers of Omaha has been advertising for over a year around $31K for engine only, and $36K for engine and labor. Good core is required at this price.

 

friend told me he got his rebuilt by a mexican guy out of Summit,IL for 16 or 18k but i forgot what was included

 

Prices are way up. I paid $2100 for a reman head 3 years ago. Now it’s $3800 from the same Freightliner Dealer.

 

i pay 1400 for reman heads.

 

Where? I need one.
