Unsafe GPS Truck Route Garmin Dezl

    You should take a look at Google Maps Street View before you lump it into the same category as Waze or GPS. It's not even in the sane league.

    Yes -- have already used "Street View" many times -- & you're right....it's amazing. :-D

    Still -- using Google Maps by itself (or any other stand-alone simliar nav system) for truck-based navigation needs is extremely risky/dangerous. :bom:

    How so? If I use SV to confirm route is acceptable and drop pins to make Maps use the route I've chosen; what's so dangerous? I haven't used an atlas in over 20 years.

    Consider yourself very fortunate -- Google Maps doesn't address at all what are/could be truck-restricted routes...and also any possible vehicle clearance issues -- or potential bridge weight limit restrictions.

    Basically -- what you don't see via Google...doesn't mean the potential problem isn't there. :dontknow:

    Also: Barney Fife is (in most cases) NOT a good sport with the above.....:(

    Street View has never been wrong for me. Ever. The signs are all there or they're not.

    It's called preparation and anyone that does their due diligence will get the job done damage free. To claim using anything other than an atlas is "dangerous" is ridiculous.

    FYI ‘clarification’ does not mean muddy the waters and exaggerate what was stated.

    Im saying I do find the GPS, and more importantly my trip plans, very reliable. Every decision I make is made by me not the “magical black box”. Ive never once been routed under a bridge less than 13’6”. Ive been driving 10 years and many of those years include stops in every small town in the Appalachian’s and the old cities on the east coast (minus NYC thats a whole different animal).

    Does your atlas show a recent ariel photo with phone numbers and hours and reviews of your destination?

    Does your atlas show the most fuel efficient route to your destination?

    Does your atlas tell you how many parking spots every major TS and mom and pop TS have and when the weigh stations are likely to be open?

    Does your atlas tell you if a road is closed or if there is heavy traffic?

    You make it seem like entering the address of your destination, and stops along the way, into a GPS is a heavy burden. I doubt you purchase and carry city maps for all 48 states so youre using a trucking GPS and google satellites like everyone else. The big difference is you lack the skill set to properly use these tools and make claims that it’s because you are so good at using the paper atlas.

    The atlas is useful for size and weight charts and phone numbers etc… and you’ll never hear me say there is no value in map reading skills. You’ll never catch me without one as a backup and I do have paper maps for most of the states I frequent as well.

    I mastered map reading in the 2nd grade during the hour or two we spent on it and have retained that skill set all these years.

    I briefly used a Garmin Dezl. I recall I had to enter my truck dimensions. Are you 100% sure your GPS has the correct height/width/weight for a semi truck?
