C'mon drivers! What's the big deal about staying in HOS compliance anyway?

Depends.. They work perfect for an LTL operation. Before the 14 hour clock, they could split your shift and it was totally legal even though it was not conducive to proper rest. The 24 hour clock being recognized with the 14 and 10 off is also ideal for what we do.

I would like to see HOS tailored to different segments/classifications of trucking but that would make way to much sense for a government agency to actually do.

Not having been out there, I didn't even see that snake......(money-hungry carriers, performance-hungry dispatchers/planner, that is)

Therein lies the problem? It's the drivers, no it's the carriers, no it's the drivers, no it's the drivers....... "lose-lose" deal for the drivers either way, right?

There was a day, many years ago when two or three books a month was the norm, Hell, I ran for a guy in the 70s who didnt even ask for copies of my log, he gave me an enevlope of 50 dollar bills to give to the scale masters and troopers, I dont even remember the DOT cops back then. But its a new world, I run it legal, and I log it legal, I may strech it a littl at the end of the day to find better parking, but not by much. I like it a lot better, I don't havr to keep looking over my shoulder. I am not fesared of an inspection as I pull into Banning, and I just set the cruise going across Ohio. I am making more now, and the boss is Happy, and the stress is low. I wont take a load I can not do legally. Sometime I think of the old days, and say what was I doing? It was a lot more fun, but I am older, and thank goodness, a little more wiser.
Just my thoughts, I hope I did not bore you all

    Safe miles to you all,
    Larry

If you look at it, the American medical field kills about 1.25 million Americans each year, while truck drivers don't come close. So yeah, you should be more scared of your doctor than your doctor of you driving.

These are 1.25 million medical mistakes each year.

Yeah, more less that's the case. When I drove OTR I was 21/22 and didn't really understand the consequences of running illegal. I had Qualcomm but nothing was verified against it so I turned in toll receipts for NYC bridges and delivery papers that were a day off from my log. I did it to maximize my income and maximize my time at home. I don't think I could get away with that now at that carrier but if for some reason I had to drive OTR again, you better believe I would be doing whatever I had to do to maximize money and home time even though I now understand the consequences.

This is yet another reason I would leave the industry altogether if for some reason I no longer had a job at Con-way Freight. We've had drivers in serious accidents where they were not at fault and the log lined up so they were not sued or held legally liable in any way - that makes for piece of mind for me going up and down I95 on a nightly basis.

Well; heck my body regulates itself better than some idiot telling me when I need to run and when I need to sleep. What good does it do me if I still have 4 hours left to drive legal and I am dead tired? Or my time is up and I am wide awake? Heck I have shut down for a nap a couple hours from home when I still had time to drive. The reason? I was tired.

Complying is easy, IF you know the rules. You wanna be a truck driver? Then you need to know the rules and be on top of things. KNOWLEDGE, KNOWLEDGE, KNOWLEDGE. Be smarter than the bureaucrats, right? They ain't truck drivers, you are. I never had a log book violation and I fudged all the time. But People, I'm smart, I know my business, Not bragging, just being factual....Play the game to win.
