So, for you, I wouldn't say that all hope is lost in trying to find a job. It may not be the job you want or the one you thought you would end up with but there is something out there that will get you behind the wheel and earning a living.
Look at the skilled trades section on Craigslist in the big cities like Dallas, Atlanta, Philly, etc. There are plenty of companies looking for drivers. In Dallas I see a lot of jobs available on Craigslist for drivers. One driving job I see quite often is construction companies looking for a driver to haul their equipment around and they pay a decent wage. Most of them are hourly jobs with some overtime and I have seen several paying $25-$30 per hour plus overtime.
Keep looking and you will find something to get you started.austinmike, Chinatown, tscottme and 3 others Thank this. -

I know people who are driving trucks and in one case for a charter bus company that have felony backgrounds. Several of these people were convicted of the lower charges of homicide. One even spent almost 25 years for murder. Felonies present a problem when it comes to entering Canada and anything that requires being bonded. The offenses listed as permanent disqualifying offenses to get hazmat or a TWIC can prevent you from jobs that require you to have them. Some carriers have customers that require the driver to not be a convicted felon.
HOWEVER
The problem the OP is facing right now is a general turndown of the economy that has allowed the carriers to be more selective.
What I tell people in this position is to stay positive and keep making applications. You might have to haul rubberized dog crap out of Omaha for a few years, but time will work in your favor.
