There's a small mom-and-pop cafe up the road from us and the parking area has room for a few trucks. Some of the locals will leave their trucks there overnight or during hometime.

The truck pictured below is frequently parked there in the evening, and when I passed last night I noticed he had buckets over his exhaust stacks. The evening was dreary... maybe a light drizzle here and there... but I don't remember seeing the buckets there before despite the heavy volume of rain we've recently received.

Did he top his pipes with the buckets to keep out rain? Or is he afraid that with springtime upon us, our healthy and industrious bird population will start building nests in there?

Would someone explain the buckets to me? :biggrin_25519:

(No, the paint job isn't horrendous. I've blurred out the company name and ID info.)

The buckets are kinda high up there, ya know! Maybe they help him find his truck more easily.:biggrin_25523:

My dad also does that with his older farm tractors that have a straight stack for the same reason to keep the rain out
Instead of a plastic bucket he uses a coffee can, wont melt if the stack is hot

It keeps the rain and condensation out, so the soot doesn't end up repainting the truck and stacks in matte black spots and streaks. He might be leaving it sit for awhile would be my guess.

It could be something else, but that is why I would cover the stacks.

I have a couple of old metal coffee cans screwed to grade stakes that I put over my stacks in rainy weather to keep the rain from getting in my exhaust system when the motor is off.

When water gets in there and you start the truck it makes a helluva mess.

    Ducks and 25(2)+2 Thank this.

Years ago trucks would have "flappers" over their exhausts. When the engine was stopped they would cover the hole. Going down the road exhaust pressure would open them up. If a truck was left idling @500 RPM they would rattle up and down. People that did that could be found parked next to me.

Awww I plan to use them. Grin, then again when I can buy a rig, it will have an APU so you wont hear them rattle. And yes, I will remember to put the hinge in the forward direction. LOL

Ducks, I'm impressed that he would think of something like that, I think he is going to be sitting a while, You will notice that when he placed those there the pipes were cold enough to do it with out the plastic melting. Thanks for the paint explanation. TD.

You're right, Native! Now that you mention it, I remember seeing those! I never thought of the rattle factor, though, when idling. It's amazing what I learn here. :biggrin_25519:
