Tenacity and determination usually pay off, it is just a question of how long can take rejection.

Hauling steel is a good job. Make sure you secure it well, as in beyond minimum requirements, an extra strap or two go a long way.

I tell new drivers, if your looking in your mirror wondering if something is shifting, put a strap on it...can't move now.

My uncle was in a similar place as you, although serious violent charges in his past ( being an enforcer for a biker gang will do that).

He cleaned up, eventually got his class 1 license, took some less desirable jobs hauling crude on the Alaska highway, got a few years experience, now has a good job in Kamloops BC, hauling chemical tanker.

If you are motivated, truly cleaned up and can hang in there, you will do fine.

    I wish you well.

Use your training time in the classroom to absorb as much information as possible. If there is something you don't quite understand or need clarification don't hesitate to ask. They are there to teach. Keep to yourself. Don't be the storyteller and offer up a bunch of personal information about yourself to your potential coworkers. Also, don't go drink with the boys while in training. Companies do not like that and they don't like their recruits drinking in the hotel they are paying for. I have talked to some people in the past that got booted from training for drinking.

When it comes to your time in the driver seat take your time to become acclimated with the truck and your surroundings. If you don't know something please ask your trainer. They are there to help you. Just like the other post said, if you are unsure about your load securement, use extra. Strap and chain like your family is in the car behind you. There is no such thing as too much securement.

Also, when you go to do your drug screen, follow your company's procedures and the screening facilities procedures. Once you are at the drug screening site, DON'T LEAVE until you have provided a sample and they have completed the chain of custody paperwork. There are too many stories here in the forum about new drivers having to go through the SAP (Substance Abuse Program) before they ever get their first job because they left the facility or did something else wrong.

On a more positive note, congrats on getting a potential spot for training with a company. I really hope you get your chance. Come back to the forum and let us know how things are going with training. If there is anything that you need to know the experienced drivers and owner operators here can help.

    Good luck man.

Tough time to be looking for a job, the holiday and winter season also can slow things down, so maybe you timed your application for jobs at the incorrect time of year, you'll find around March things will start to pick up as temps warm up more people start drinking soda pop, beer, and eating ice cream again, more people return to work after their holidays (vacation). Added to this is the unofficial recession, needing at least 2 quarters of negative growth to officially be in a recession has not helped the transport industry. So unfortunately, you've got all the above mentioned events, added to this is your driving record, and previous convictions, which just adds to the situation. Lots of businesses especially online adverts have very clever techniques they use to lure people into spending / investing their money by appealing to their emotions or egos. They paint this wonderful picture in a potential customers mind and as they say "when emotions are high logic is low" and people are more inclined to make a decision they otherwise would of thought about more carefully. Anyway it is all just a matter of time, hope you get to find a job, we all make mistakes in life provided we learn from them and move on, hope you get to find a job in the transport industry mate.

Persistence is very much a key ingredient for success vs failure -- especially for a first-year driver.
