What @NightWind is saying is its cheaper to deal with now than if it comes apart later. If the driveshaft comes apart, you're buying a new shaft, yokes and u-joints. Plus any combination of the following: air bags, ABS modulators, air tanks, fuel tanks, possibly diff/transmission parts, carrier bearing etc. Its cheaper to pay up now than to wait and potentially pay several thousand more. A dropped driveline can easily be a 5 figure repair, especially if you have to get dragged to the shop on a hook.

Some if the gliders have recycled VIN. You have to tell the parts people that it's a Glider year and all that stuff

If you don’t want to pay then you need to source your own parts and do your own work. I’m not sure who you are calling a dealer in this instance because your story is hard to follow, but earlier you stated the price was over cost, which is normal. Markup over wholesale is normal. And if you’re at a shop that buys their parts from a parts house and not a wholesaler then you’re dealing with two markups. Not every business is like trucking. Most businesses don’t operate at a loss. They price accordingly.

I understand your frustration but you seem to be focused on the small charges and ignoring the very large bill of 5k. If it was only 1500 but they marked up the parts to get an extra couple hundred it would mean very little if you were generating some decent revenue. Sounds like you're hurting for cash trying to operate being the cheapest truck on the spot market right now.

I don't know what kind of truck operation you are running or what you are doing but you got to remember time is money too.

I've over paid for parts or services and stuff I could have done myself because it got me back on the road faster.
Also think about building a relationship with a shop. I've got a good shop 4 miles from my house that I buy parts from. I could probably get them cheaper elsewhere, but when I'm in a pinch that shop I have a good relationship with is there.

Might as well just let them finish what they started because it's going to cost even more money and waste more time pursuing other options. So the markup on the ujoints won't look so bad in that light.

It's happening all the time. Most of the time they don't know what's going on. Yes, you can sue, but it doesn't mean you'll win.

We don't know the overall shape of his truck, but if it's good, then I'd do the 5K repair if they can do it properly.

There’s several different levels of quality with u joints as well as genuine vs aftermarket. This might explain some of the difference in price. Depending on how bad the full round yokes on the end of the shaft are they might be fixable. They can be shrunk with a torch and rebored. I’ve done it many times and never had problems. But getting someone else to do it…probably not going to happen. Honestly if the joints are just a little loose it isn’t that big of a deal. It’s not right but usually will get you down the road, but will need to be monitored. If you’re not good at watching things and keeping ahead of it it’s not for you…just fix it. I didn’t put a lot of effort into figuring out exactly what all is being replaced but spl is very expensive so 5k probably isn’t that bad and you’ll have to pay for the disassembly and to put it back…so just fix it unless this shop doesn’t do good work in which case you shouldn’t have taken it there.

I”am 100% sure he is not what I call a quality customer.. You know the kinda that brings his own parts with him when you work on his truck because he thinks he can buy parts cheaper than you, He is also the guy that make’s a huge issue about why you charged him 100. for miscellaneous hardware and shop supplies on a 4500 repair bill then takes 6 mths to pay the entire bill.. Basically in a nut shell the kind you hate to see come through the door
