I worked 40 weeks last year and put 94k miles on my truck. I don’t see that happening with a company job.

I work with some W2 drivers taking off nearly that much time in a year. I'm sure most of it's paid, they can probably afford to take some unpaid too. It's not likely most places but does happen.

Weekends off is close to that on the number of days worked, but I should’ve been more clear. I doubt there are many company positions that would allow 1-3 week chunks at a time and parking before Thanksgiving and being done for the year. Sure there are jobs out there but most seem to come with a price. I could go work in the oilfield and do 2 on 1 off or 3 on 2 off but I’d be living and working in North Dakota or the Permian Basin. And that’s not a life I want. I could go back to the road construction company I worked for 20 years ago and work in Montana all summer and have the winter off to live wherever I wanted, but then your time off is limited in the summer when the rest of your family is making plans.

I agree there are good jobs out there that allow someone to be lazy and have a relaxed schedule but they’re few and far between for someone just starting at a new job.

I'm at a job like that. Yeah there's guys here that knock off around the holidays for several weeks. Paid time off doesn't come from laziness. We got some drivers that don't work very hard but that's cool too. Somebody starting a new job has to prove themselves by putting in a little time. Two or three years and keeping a clean record will open up a lot of opportunities for just about anybody.

Right, and I don’t have to put my time in being the low man. If I want to lease to a company I’m very up front about how I work and what my expectations are. I let them know if they need 140k a year I’m not their man. I let them know how many days I want to run on an average year. It either works for them or it doesn’t. I don’t have to earn my schedule.

The one driving job I had was a great company. I put in my years and got to the point I could take 6 weeks off a year with no issue, anything more than that it was asked that we pay a prorated amount for the insurance on the truck that was parked. That’s why I went back there after selling my equipment in 2017. Honestly I’d probably still be there if I hadn’t gone to Hawaii.

Now that I’m in the position I’m in nobody will ever convince me to work for someone again. I may sell my truck but it will be because I’m doing something different, it won’t be to drive for someone. We all have different goals and lifestyles.

I'm not trying to convince you to do anything. I'm just saying there's some good paying jobs out here that don't burn a driver out and make them miserable, even low mans. And I meant to say "somebody starting a new INDUSTRY has to put in two to three years" to prove themselves, keep a clean record in that time and don't change jobs. Anybody that already has that can get a good job.

Right? I think he more or less ignored my post and just cherry picked what looked good, then tried to set up a strawmen. Im still trying to figure out where he got his numbers lol.

I mean assumeing you made 90K that puts you in the 22% tax bracket. Using the math for KS simply because google gave that result. After taxes on $90,000 you get to keep about $66,000. Now take out health insurance of which lets be super generious and assume the company pays 50% which would still be $250 a month using the national average and now your at $63,000. Then lets assume you have the other costs i listed $1200 for clothing, boots, glasses yada yada now we are at $61800.

Meanwhile after all that and paying my taxes i still kept $72,000 in my pocket with the potential to easily boost that north of $130K AFTER taxes once a bunch of the startoff debt and payments and amazon wrecking my truck costs fall off......so what was his argument again?
