Hope all of you are well first of all.

I really wanted to join the military, scored 92 on ASVAB but could not get past MEPS physical.

I decided to give trucking a try and recieved my CDL in Community College. Straight A's across the board. I'm hoping someone can tell me which companies one should hunt for? I see all the nightmare stories about CRE and Swift and wonder if they all are like that. Any info would be great.

Depending on your age, and where you live, might try con-way truckload.

Where do you live? I might be useful to the members here to know that. I'm a wannabe too and I've found that choices are limited based on your location. Maybe not with the mega-carriers, but with many of the good small to medium sized carriers.

Have you given any thought to the type of freight you would like to move? Flatbed, reefer, van.....? You can then start to look at those particular companies.

Oldnew is correct..... choices are limited based on location (currently). My interests lie with flatbed, unfortunately the two companies I am interested in (TMC and Maverick) do not currently hire east of I95. At the same time, if it takes me pulling a reefer to get my foot in the door and learn I am more than willing to do that. With regards to reefer work..... I personnally like the company side of PRIME. The training program they offer looks to be rather thorough. I also like KLLM. Both companies have their "good/bad" reviews on here....and both hire from the school I went to (ATI in Virginia Beach).

BTW....thats a ####### ASVAB score....well done. As far as I am concerned its the militarys loss.

Best of luck in your hunt.

Krypto and Tricker, try and get out and talk to company drivers. Do not rely on just forum input. There are thousands of drivers out there who never participate on them, so go ask questions.

Fratsit, give Grayson Mitchell a call. Their hiring area map doesn't extend out to E City, but it might be worth asking, anyway. If nothing else, call Swift and see about flatbedding for them. That would get you the experience (both OTR and flatbed) that would incline a better company to give you a look, even if you were slightly out of their hiring area.

I'm going with them for that same reason, but my issue is out of a truck for too long. They are the only company that will take me on without going thru a school again. I do have to go out with a Mentor for 6 weeks, but I look at that as penance :biggrin_25523:

Truth is CRE is that bad and Swift is not. They are a good place to start. Put in a year or two and move on. Living off the main shipping corridors (like east of I-95) makes it harder to get hired. Give swift a try, it will get you in, get you some OTR experience and give you a chance to see what is in your are to move on to.
