Once you get on with a trainer and running team, you should get about 5000 miles per week on average. We've been doing a little better than that.

Getting home is up to you and your trainer. We've been taking about 5 days at home every 4 or 5 weeks.

Your trainer should have a refrigerator and a microwave that you can use on the truck. Stock up at Walmart, and avoid expensive truckstop food.

I got through all my training in roughly 3.5 months. I started the last week of March 08, got my 60k miles, completed upgrade classes and home by Mid July... I took almost 2 weeks off before coming back to pickup my truck and get going as a solo.

I am not saying a 2 week break is typical (at all)... I took no hometime (at all) while training and I cleared it with the training dept and my fleet manager.

I chose not to take any hometime... it was offered, but I just wanted to knock it out, and didnt want to potentially lose my trainer... who had also instructed me.

I guess I really didnt answer the complete question.

CDL students are told the moment they get there expect to be away from home for the first 6 weeks to 8 weeks depending on how the instruction/training flows..

    Breaking it down:

Half-week to a week at Prime for initial instruction
Roughly 4 weeks minnimum with a CDL instructor
Test out for liscense (depends on availability, practice time, attempts)
    2-3 weeks with a trainer
additional days can add up while waiting for a instructor, and/or trainer... getting freight that gets you back to the terminal to test out... repairs on the road... etc can stretch this time from 6 to 8 weeks.

Your instructor may decide to keep you on for the training phase and that would make it easier to get home a little earlier as you dont need the intial 2-3 weeks for a trainer to get comfortable with a new trainee.

After that initial 6 weeks or so and you get your first hometime, you work it out with your trainer on hometime after that. (I wouldnt be ballsey enough to ask for another 3 weeks)

Also, your trainer may not choose to go home when you do... he may stay out on the road and continue to conduct business moving freight.. he may or may not be able to get back to you as quickly as you like. You may want to be home 3 days and he might not be able to get back for as long as a week or more (rare situations)... conversly you might be hoping for 5 days and he is back in 3 to pick you up. Its all about available freight. If your trainer decides to go home, he may stay longer than you want.

I suggest everytime you go home you take all your stuff off the truck... Many a trainee has had a trainer switch while on hometime for one reason or another.

You are only paid .12 a mile for the pay period while on hometime... no gauranteed $600 for that week if at home... $600 minnimum is only paid while the trainee is on the truck from Tues 1600 to Tues 1600 the following week (available 7 days for dispatch)

thanks for the advice yall. one more question i am trying to decide what division i should go in refer or flat bed. my instructor told me if i am planning on goin lease later on refer is the better choice, but company flat bed pays 2 cents a mile more plus pay for tarping a load plus less chance of getting a little tonka toy for a truck. i was told to call jim wilkins after i get my cdl which will be the 9th of april. so im trying to decide in a hurry. thanks for the help.

Ok now I understand I spoke with Kristy # Prime again & she got me straight.Man was I lost but the problem now is that I thought I had a misderminor charge for some dum stuff that went down in Broward County Fl in 9-08. I went to jail for just telling my landlord at the time what he could do to get his rent if he didn't fix my overflowing towelt(idk not the best speller)the crapper...Old man called the cops I went to jail that how it goes down in FL...I put that on my app.Because I thought it was on my record, so I get off the phone with her...turn to the wife and I'm like can you believe this?!?So long story short I called my atterney in FL & he informs me that it's not on my record & to stop sticking my own foot on my mouth & never again tell anyone about it. So I call back Kristy # Prime & by this time of day she not in...SO I happy now I guess...it's been hard to get happy around here lately. We've got to sell are car just so I can go:biggrin_25514:

We have great equipment here at Prime. Everything is new and pretty well equipped... not stripped. The trucks are comfortable.
