Glad to see you back ,Kc0rey, and I would agree with the actual performance of an out of the box CB being about the same as tweaked and tuned, and I know a 5/8 wave antenna outperforms the others. The only thing about buying a CB is that if you don't get it checked out by a good shop, you really don't know if it's working right other than by the old unreliable radio check method.

IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO HAVE A 10 METER RADIO IN YOU TRUCK! You could have 10 of them lying in your bunk but as long as you don't have one sitting in a place that's it looks as though you have been talking on it they can do nothing to you. I don't know how many different forums i have been to where hams are saying this to apparently scare truckers. It is how ever illegal to talk on anything out side of the frequencies 26.965 and 27.405 and to have ANY radio that does over 4 watts. You can not make ANY modifications to your CB radio. Turing it up or adding an echo board is a no no in the eyes of the FCC and i myself do not own a radio that has not been tuned so I'm a law breaker as well. It kinda gets under my skin that hams complain about truckers left and right but apparently have no problem with the people on 27.025 ( the super bowl ) using well 10.000 watts of power or guys with base stations that have even more power ( some have over a 100.000 thousand ) just so they can talk skip when they want.
You also very rarely see any posts regarding the number of hams who get busted for talking on AM ( CB bands ) using a ham radio or some that get fined for using more than 1500 watts which i believe is the limit for a ham op. The ham community does not want us to know that they also have out laws in their hobby as well
I have not been here long enough to put the hams that are on this forum in the same category as others i have had the misfortune of talking to, that is not my intention. Just stating the things i have noticed in the past on other forums. -

Well as one of the HAM's on this forum i personaly never run more than 500-800 watts its not requried to talk on the bands. and one of the rules says only the required wattage to carry on inteligable coversation. in other word if they can hear you on 2 watts why run 1500 just because you can. The only band's that really need power to talk on are 75 and 160 and then there are some days 10,000 watts want make it work so use a different band. thats the reason we have so many bands is one is allways open into the area you want to talk. ITs the band not the power that makes HAM radio work. And i will admit we have our bad apples just like the CBer's do but the numbers are less and they find them selves talking to no one after awhile because HAMS want talk to them if they sound like idiots on the air.just look at the FCC web site and you can see aqll the inforcment action and its not all against CBer's it is against HAMS and buisness as well so they try and inforce the rules and laws equal.

The number of hams that actually get disciplined for talking on CB are quite small. All radio services sometimes have lawbreakers--including hams. Having a "10 Meter 'Amateur' radio" is problematic if you have no license to USE the 10 Meter band. FCC knows that the purpose of these things is to try to skirt the law (Part 95) on "channels" and output power.
They have "bands" of "channels"; REAL amateur radios do NOT have "channels" which are an indication of a consumer product or appliance. Many "10 Meter" (yeah, right) radios also have chrome faces, echo and this "talkback" thing that is peculiar to CB radio; real Amateur radios do NOT have such nonsense. If it LOOKS like a CB, BEEPS and squeaks like a CB and echo's like a CB it must be a duck---I mean, a CB!
There is NO "scare tactic" on the part of the hams! MANY trucking companies have been directly WARNED by letter by FCC to STOP their drivers from transmitting on the 10 Meter band. Yes, it got started when truckers began talking illegally on that band by flipping those bootleg "band" switches AND the hams began to HEAR their activity on the Amateur bands. Sorry, folks you are NOT welcome to do that!! Amateur radio is NOT a casual "consumer" toy as it requires some knowledge on the part of the operator more than simply turning on a TV set. When the drivers chose to talk out of band, the hams began to quietly and sneakily drive along on the highway and RECORD their activities to send to FCC---AND they DO have an advocacy at FCC in the form of a career FCC attorney who was put in charge of Amateur enforcement. Notifications by the licensed Amateurs went to this man who then told companies that they MUST stop this activity or face big fines----AND he meant BUSINESS!! The companies (and they include UPS, FedEx, R & L Carriers, Estes, Superior Carriers, United Van Lines, Waggoners, J W Randolph, just to name a few) were required to call this Special Counsel for Enforcement to discuss the matter. Mr "H" then told the companies that they should institute a policy that prohibits "export", or "10 Meter" radios in their fleet.
FedEx has such a policy as does UPS. IF a driver gets caught with a "10 Meter" radio installed in his truck, he will be fired--and that is what is suggested everytime a driver gets caught talking on the 10 Meter band. Some of the licensed folks were so incensed by the presence of illegal operators on 10 Meters, they even sent out tons of emails to companies alerting them to the problem. The companies often responded by doing what the writers suggested; BANNING "10 Meter" radios in their trucks BEFORE they ever got a letter from FCC.
So again, they most certainly CAN ticket you for having one of these radios since they are against the law to sell and illegal to USE on CB! There is a pesky provision in Part 95 (the rules for CB that FEW people even bother to read;they get their info from CB myth, legend and Bubba down the road) that states (basically) that if something is found that is in or on your premises (amps, modified radios, ham sets set up for CB, or 10 Meter radios), and other provisions of the law have been broken, you will be presumed to have used said device counter to Part 95 rules unless, of course, you have a license to use the device for, example, ham
radio! Amateurs, contrary to some belief, MAY use these so-called "10 Meter" radios as they may even BUILD a transciever if they want without penalty so long as it does not create unwanted interference!
Hams have no right to complain about what goes on on 27.025 so long as such operation doesn't interfere with THEM! Hams have no authority to do that; they mostly mind their own business on their OWN frequencies. Using a moral equivilency argument to justify or say, "well, the hams did this or that, so it's OK for "us" to break the law" won't fly. Illegal is illegal and if a ham OR a CB operator is violating the law, then they deserve what they get if caught! AND they SHOULD be caught and punished. *I* don't talk out of band; indeed, I have little use for a CB except to check for traffic. IOW, once I find which lane to get in, the CB goes back OFF. If I had to listen to that mess all the time, I'd go nuts! YUCK!
Finally, if there are all those "many" hams talking on the CB band, then please bring those notices here for all to see! (www.fcc.gov/eb) and www.arrl.org (enforcement log). Hams have nothing against truckers----until they come up onto the 10 Meter band without license! When that happens, they have every right to complain; 10 Meters belongs to THEM by virtue of license! Anyone who wishes to EARN the same privilege is welcome to do what the law requires and obtain that license!

Interesting post. I am going to go out on a limb though and be the bad guy. I see aot of hams telling people go get their license, and do it legal, and looking down their nose at the thought of a 11m radio. There is a segment of hams that need to wake up, and realize there is a sizeable chunk of the ham population in the USA that came from CB. A lil more respect from the law abiding hams is in order. Anything less makes them, well, a glorified cb'er! Next, hams are quick to say, go take a test and get your ticket, and then make a big hooplah over reduced ham numbers, and argue amongst themselves about morse code. What I havent seen, is energy and time spent doing open houses, and basic training in ham radio operation for aspiring hams, whether they be from cb or just new all together. Just think, if the hams used all that time and energy that was wasted over the code, and used it to welcome with open arms and teach beginners the ropes, what would be accomplished. Instead, we see a secretive society that isnt interested in teaching anyone a thing, to just make it an exclusive club that requires a test to get in, and unless you know a friend of a friend of a friend, your never going to learn everything you really need. Instead of throwing the old take that test speech, go teach 2 people all about radio. This may be the behavior of a few hams, but it directly affects the opinion formed of the ARS in general. Maybe when some of the rickety old people that think that ham will die with them finally move on, ARS will finally prosper again. Im not against hams, Im against the current mentality alot of them have. Whats funnier, is most of them are the same ones that were against the morse code test being dropped.
