A lot of ppl don't realize when they DH there's very little wear and tear on both tractor or trailer so there isn't much "cost" associated outside time and fuel.

Don't mean to be a smart butt but where do you get the "flying machine" to attached to the truck so it doesn't touch the ground?

DH has the same amount of wear and tear as does a full load, the way you make it sound is the truck doesn't use anything but fuel to move to a load.

See you don't cheat youself on your maintaince cost per mile because you are running empty.

This is what makes the difference between a failed attempt of being an owner and a smart one.

You set the amount of DH you are willing to run based on your overall cost per mile and negotiate accordingly.

I've tried to order those trucks that only cost fuel when you DH. Never found one yet.

Well...since I own my own 4br house, completely paid off 2021 Stepdeck trailer and a Kenworth T660 with a 150 inch custom sleeper and been an Owner Operator nearly 20 years, I guess I'm "FAILING" pretty well, over and over again.

So good for you! It works for you, you know your business and trust your decisions but there is a failure rate of 90 plus percent and those newbies who don't understand the game as you do can easily fall into the trap of ignoring their operating costs and just grabbing the money, the BIG BUCKS.

I learned the second that truck is moving, it has to earn, no matter what is in the box or on the deck.

Just think what all you would have if you didn’t think running empty wasn’t costing you much. Especially, after 20 years.

Plus there's another commodity that's not being considered......hours.
If the dude is making money running 50%+ deadhead miles, that's cool.
But for the newer guys, you also have to keep in mind as to what it's doing to your available hours.

    blairandgretchen and snowwy Thank this.

Guy I’m familiar with is a company driver that gets 20% of what the truck grosses .

he runs more deadhead than loaded ,
Still averages 90 cpm , home every weekend .

company he works for has a niche market and gets paid very good , for
Doing work that 97% of drivers aren’t eligible to do , because the shipper is very very selective about who gets into their facilities , and who gets to see and is trusted to haul their very expensive proprietary equipment .

lot less wear on the machine when it’s empty than when you’re trying to climb over Mont Eagle grossing 80k

or going to West Virginia at 80k etc

I did the math , I could make the same
Money just deadheading back and grabbing another load at $1.25 a mile than dicking around all day driving 3 hours to sit 5 hours getting loaded with a backhaul at 70 cents a mile , and spend another whole day getting unloaded on the other end and deadheading 3 hours back for more bananas .

it was a unique situation with an unlimited amount of power only pulling someone else’s trailer loads at $1.25 a mile when the normal rate back then was 70 cents .

I paid $14k cash for my rig , and I did not have to work as hard as the guys with huge payments on the brand new rigs .

Guy I was referring to above , the company he works for is kind of in the same situation

they have a steady supply of good paying loads that originate about 70 miles away from their terminal ,
They bid on those loads and win almost every time because they know what number is profitable to them and still beat the other companies that are eligible to be in the bidding.

    Vampire Thanks this.
