UK tried outlawing tobacco thru phases and there was so much backlash, that idea went in the trash can.
Now they want to do the same with vaping. Tobacco & vaping should be a personal choice.

Except when it affects others, like climbing into a cab stinking of the stuff. I'll check with my mates in UK to see if you are right and that the law has been repealed.

Agree, shouldn't affect others. Give us an update from the UK.

I have posted a request at the bottom of a 17 year old thread in a UK forum so await replies. If, however the workplace ban was linked to the general public place ban, then it is definitely still in force. Pubs and restaurants etc.. I was already living in France at the time and I was surprised that the French, champion smokers that they are, obeyed the ban in bars right from the off. The one exception, soon after it came into force was a small village with obviously no police presence in it. I pulled up for a morning coffee and on opening the door was hit by a solid wave of smoke. I suppose they had everything shut tight so the smell couldn't leak into the street and alert a passing gendarme.

In the meantime, this was the law with all its penalties back in 2007:

Failure to comply with the law will be a criminal offence, as set out in the
Health Act 2006. Penalities and fines are being set in regulations to be
made by the Department of Health:
    — Individuals may be liable to a fixed penalty of £50 for smoking in
smoke-free premises. In cases of prosecution and conviction, the
    maximum fine is £200.
    — The manager or person in control of any smoke-free premises could be
fined a fixed penalty of £200 for failing to display ‘No Smoking’ signs.
In cases of prosecution and conviction, the maximum fine is £1,000.
    — The manager or person in control of any smoke-free premises could
be fined up to £2,500 for failing to prevent others from smoking in
    those premises.

This means that if a driver is asked to drive a lorry which obviously has been smoked in, the penalty for the manager, personally, could be £ 2,500. ($3,100 today)

I quit smoking cigarettes by gradually cutting down the number I smoked each day.

After my scary trip to ER, which was my defining moment to quit, I also implemented a long term back to fitness plan. I was regaining fitness and body strength week after week. It was very motivational but also effectively helped to endure nicotine cravings.

I think we still have too much tobacco grown here and the lobby that represents those growers, to ever have anything like that here 100 percent of the time. While there are many places that no longer allow smoking I don't think we will ever be smoke free.

Update is the ban in all workplaces, which includes truck cabs is still in force. Many drivers who responded to me said they liked it and some even said it helped them stop smoking. Others said that some company drivers were allowed to smoke in the cab as long as it wasn't a shared truck and was kept clean inside, but even so the management leave themselves open to large fines if it is seen and reported.

Much more serious and heavy handed imo is the first stages passed yesterday of a new law aimed at stopping youngsters from even starting to smoke. Anyone born since 2009, thus 15 years of age now, is banned FOR EVER from buying cigarettes. As the age on official adulthood in the UK is 18 that means that in 4 years time a 19 year old and a 20 year old together in the same shop will have different rules applied to them. The theory is that as the years roll by everybody born before 2009 will have died out and nobody wil be smoking anymore. Yeah right, worked well illiminating drugs didn't it? And I can see the ghost of Al Capone heading for the UK as we speak shouting 'prohibition yippee!!':biggrin_255:

After puffing on about a pack at 16, my sister saw me and told our Mom. I wasn’t going to hurt her like that and that was it.

When I went into the military, many were tempted to start in basics, but not me.
