Anyone else missing winter?
77fib77, Dale thompson, dwells40 and 2 others Thank this. -
not in the slightest. Been raining for the past week and projected to for most of next.
Just enough to have the construction crew and my self say "Nope.... Not today."
LOL and then the picture loaded.... Yep we are at the crossroads of snow season and construction season up this way.otterinthewater, Dale thompson and dwells40 Thank this. -
Thursday to Saturday we had minor winter like weather. Seen everything from rain to sleet and snow.
The odd part was the temperatures. Never really got winter cold. Think the lowest temperature was around 48. Go figure.otterinthewater and Dale thompson Thank this. -
Does anyone have any solid advice on buying new vs used?
I’ve been looking for a new truck for about 6 months. The stuff I like (Volvo 860) with around 300k and spec’d for a O/O is +/-$85k.
I keep seeing trucks I’d like to buy for $110k. That’s north of what I want to spend.
Never considered buying new due to depreciation etc etc etc, but I’m really starting to think about it. It’s just $190k is just an insane amount of money. I just would like to buy a truck that hasn’t been hammered by idiots.
My main thought is to get one with a couple years of warranty left that qualifies for Volvos extended engine, after treatment, and transmission plan. The 860 fits all pieces I’m looking for with the D13 and iSpeed transmission.
Ugh. It’s exhausting going and looking at trucks and realizing that most are #### boxes that have been run by leptons.Dale thompson and dwells40 Thank this. -

I finally got sick of the crap mounting systems that come with GPS, or spending $100 for some other piece of junk.
I found a company that makes GPS systems for airplanes and they’ve got a specific one for the iPad 6 mini.
I spent way more than I wanted ($250). After mounting it I realized it’s worth every penny. It doesn’t rattle, come loose and the case for the iPad is easily removable.
The entire unit is real carbon fiber and aircraft grade aluminum, and the rest is industrial 3D printed.
it came with great nyloc hardware. Too much work … I used the screws from a garmin system. There’s was only (3) so I gotta find one more. LOL

Your truck is a tool. Get the correct tool to do the job you will be doing. The correct truck will keep that Pain in the Butt driver from whining at you as much. Also keep the dispatcher and Inner account quiet over unplanned down time and un-budgeted repair costs.
Part of what you are seeing price wise is recent production trucks tend to have significant issues develop around 400k miles. I would not buy one around those miles unless I found an Identical "parts truck" to go with it so that I could remove and replace sub assemblies. But may not be practical cause chances are it is going to break out on the road.
I think million mile + trucks are a thing of the past. So should plan on trading off anything you get before it hits that 400k mile mark.
When I was looking to upgrade the last truck I was focusing on Kenworth. Was down to New or Owner Operator lease returns.
Those lease returns were typically used for music shows and were set up real close to what I wanted. Were a year or 2 old and low miles. PAC-Lease in SLC would get them on occasion.
New was how I was leaning. Could get a truck to my spec with the accessories I wanted and none that I did not want (unless required by the fed). Just was not and still not committed to driving enough to justify the outlay.Last edited: Apr 30, 2024
