2223/44.45. That’s the miles I drove and the hours I worked this past week. Was asked to run an overnight round trip from the Humboldt hub to the Murfreesboro hub last night. Left at 2100 and got back at 0500 this morning. Easy peasy. Off all day today and will be doing 2 Dyersburg to Memphis turns tomorrow starting at noon. Will be back at Humboldt about 2200 tomorrow night. Because I’m working 7 straight days, I’m getting an extra days pay plus my mileage bonus.

Just curious about the FedEx ground side of things in terms of today’s freight market. Does it seem to be busy or what’s the scuttlebutt you’re hearing around the terminals?

It seems to be getting busier. I do a lot of overflow Linehaul. Take for instance what I did last night. Both ends were what was left over from set runs. They left with total weight of 34,000 pounds of parcels. My overflow trailer had 12,000 pounds to Murfreesboro then the one back had 10,000 pounds. My point being, these overflow trailers are every night and getting heavier and heavier.

Well, I suppose that’s not a bad problem to have.

Been a very easy long weekend. Stretched out my 750 miles into a quiet relaxing 4 days. Today is only a single run of 230 miles with a d/h on both ends. Pickup time is 1600, drop time is 1800 and back at the home hub at 2000. If I decide to stay in Olive Branch tonight, I’ll be done at 1800.

What do you do to occupy longer amounts of downtime? Seems I would find myself going stir crazy.

I love reading and researching everything that I read about. And my biggest occupier of my downtime is counting down the days to retirement. One thing that I’ve come to realize with this job, it’s my last job. If it was to end tomorrow, I’d rent a car, pack my things up and be home in 15 hours. There’s no more, “other” job for me. This job pays off the charts, I’ve got spoiled. I refuse to ever chase miles again. This coming July 7th is a big date. It’s when my wife turns 65. At that time we both qualify for Medicare, she will start collecting her SS, I’ve been collecting mine since last May. Our days are filled with planning our pending retirement. We have decided to sell our house here in South Florida and move up to the Gainesville area and enjoy our golden years with things we love to do, which is travel. But, I will say this, there are times that my downtime does become a little stir crazy. But it’s nothing I can’t handle. I truly believe that the light at the end of the tunnel for me is not the train, it is the end of the tunnel.
