Hey guys do you idle your trucks at night , when I was a company driver I did it but now that I pay for fuel I’m kind of not wanting to. But it doesn’t seem like it’s using that much fuel. I’m new to this so I want to save as much as I can but it’s got some places an o am so used to it for sleeping. Wondering. What you all do
Idling at night

APU. Diesel APUs supposedly use about a gallon a night while your truck uses about a gallon an hour.
They aren't cheap though. Idling a modern emissions truck isn't cheap either. You'll likely have DPF related problems sooner than later.chevyryder86, Blagoje, Rideandrepair and 6 others Thank this. -
Buy a generator and portable ac unit. Get a 4000 watt. They're the same size as 2000 for the same price roughly.
Wish I could say buy a diesel generator but they're pricey.
There's a few threads on that.
I believe the FL I last used was about a half gallon. Maybe a little more. Every truck before that was close to a gallon.

Rideandrepair and Jbrown87 Thank this. -
If you idle, kick up the Rpm’s.

Opti idle it turns on and off the engine for cabin comfort. It hits 72 turns off the, Hits 80 F and turns on again. That being said, I might buy a portable AC and use a generator that I have in my headache rack. I have an ac unit at home, but I'm out and about now. The idling doesn't help the emissions system.

1st there is zero reason to hight idle a truck newer that 2006.
2nd desel apu's use 4-6 gallons of fuel per 10 break depending on air temp.
3rd a new apu run $14-$15
4th ever hear the saying "cheap drivers aren't good, good drivers aren't cheap"... well cheap genurator's don't last, good genurators do. 4,000 watt suitcase genurators A per their website can't run a portable ac for a 10hr break with you having to refuel it. B the warranty on them is crap
5th your truck uses about 7-8 gallons per 10 hourGridaxe5588, Jbrown87, Long FLD and 1 other person Thank this. -

APU is a good investment. Recommend ComfortPro.
Takes about 3 years to pay for itself if you sit a lot between loads. However not dealing with emissions issues or excessive wear on your main money maker is well worth it.
I've spent about 20k between my APU, Lithium battery bank, inverters, dc/dc charger, solar panels/charger, Ac-dc charger and an upgraded 400amp alternator.
Its paid for itself twice over in 5 years and has plenty of life left in all the components. Very low idle time on my engine so its gonna last a very long time before it needs a rebuild.
By the way, a gen 2 Dynasys just running A/C will burn a gallon of diesel for every 4 hours of run time. Since it auto starts and stops you can usually get away with about 30-40% run time at night so you are looking at 1-1.5 gallons over a 10 hour break. I do NOT recommend a gen 2 Dynasys though....
