Then problem with guns is that every state (and some localities) have different regulations. When it comes to handguns, some 20-odd states use a common licensing clearinghouse, but the other 30 do not. NY and MA will put you in jail if you bring one into their state without a license BEFORE you enter. Canada will seize your gun, charge you with a felony, and you'll quickly learn the difference in the 2 legal systems.
In short, if you are carrying a high-value freight AND your company requires you to be armed, they will manage the permits for all the areas you will be going through. Short of that, unless you can limit yourself to those 20-odd states previously mentioned, carrying a gun can quickly become a problem. You can't use it if you would be charged for just having it, so what good is it? Where do you 'drop off' your gun before leaving a 'safe' state?
I managed just fine with a tire-beater (short piece of steel pipe with a handle grip, sold in any truckstop), and a couple portable cans of pepper spray. If "the mob" wants to steal your truck, your little pea-shooter ain't gonna stop them, anyway. I've probably delivered freight into every urban ghetto from Compton to South Side Chicago to Houston, Atlanta, Baltimore, Harlem, etc. etc. Once had to break a guys fingers with my tire beater when he climbed up on my Cabover while I was leaving an intersection, but that was the worst. Even then, a gun would've been too cumbersome to be of any use.
About 40 years ago, when I was still driving taxi at night, one of the other drivers trolled for fares in 'questionable' neighborhoods, but felt safe because he caried a revolver. One night some thug jacked him for his cash roll (about $75 at the time; it was early), and he turned around and shot the guy. Blew out his rear window, blood splattered all over the interior, and guy bled all over the rear seat. Bullet hit a nearby house. Thief was taken to the hospital and arrested; driver was charged with unsafe discharge of a firearm and had his pistol and permit confiscated. He did nearly $1000 damage to his vehicle. We laughed at him later about the whole thing....ExoGeniVI Thanks this. -
