When you're 1.5 hrs from town and need a 3 3/4" socket but only have a 4"...

 

I've done this! Works great.

 

Need longer arms. But someone got her second Harley ride. Just around the 4 mile block. Nothing but laughs. I may have created a monster.

Laminated sockets are all the rage these days

 

I cut all 8 sides out of plate steel and welded them together. You do what you need to sometimes.
