Just curious what its like, do they stop you at the POE or scales and ask for registration.
Do they put the older trucks out of service or have them towed out of state?
How much are the fines?

When you cross a scale your enrollment in the clean truck BS will be linked to your DOT#…just like everything else.
I have noticed the lack of junk trucks running around in CA. I also noticed tons of reefer/Van trailers running around with no skirts..thought you were required to have them? -
CARB has roadside sniffers with license plate readers set up in undisclosed locations to sample the exhaust as you drive by.
If your truck is emitting high Nox levels you’ll get a nice letter in the mail asking you to go to a smog test center to check your emissions system.Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this. -
I'm just wondering what would happen if someone, asking for a friend, were to roll into the port of entry with out of state tags and a older truck...

I can’t say but I’m sure whatever they do it’s designed as a deterrent. The other thing to note is that they can hold the broker liable if you’re going to use one. They require that brokers make sure the carrier is compliant.
You can also just get a 5 day? Pass if it’s a one time thing. They require it to be purchased 7 days before entry and you only will get one per year..not exactly sure I got the details correct but that’s the gist of it.
Personally FAFO isn’t the smartest way to go..could be costly. -

Okay, just talked to a gentleman from California who has some knowledge on what happens when you get busted.
First thing they do is impound your truck and force you into making it compliant. The fines are designed to insure that you won’t make a profit in California with your illegal truck.
All said and done the guy he knows that went through it cost him in excess of $16,000.

I know they use to give you a 3 day pass, and/or 1000 mile exemption. IDK now......

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) ended its three-day pass program for out-of-state trucks on January 1, 2021. The program allowed trucks to operate in California for a few days each year without meeting the state's requirements for a new or retrofitted diesel engine.
A CARB non-compliant vehicle is not authorized to haul freight in the state of California, no matter where it is registered.
