Okay, before I pull the trigger I need to make sure I'm not crazy. I mentioned the other day that I got offered a 53 ft Fontaine velocity step deck. The guy checked his payoff and he owes more on it than he thought, don't we all. Anyways he's now offering it to me for 39,000, at a thousand a month for 39 months. Is payoff is slightly more, but it's not being used and he needs to do something with it.

Am I crazy to spend almost 40K on an all Steel trailer? My thoughts are being that it's Steel and pretty new it should be a forever trailer for me.

Sounds expensive to me, but I'm poor and cheap. I'd buy something less expensive cash if possible to keep your monthly payments to a minimum. You don't want to be running garbage loads just to cover a payment on used equipment if you had the option of parking a paid off piece of equipment and watching the market.

 

While I 100% agree with that and that's why I run an older truck that's paid for, I don't have enough extra cash to buy a good trailer. I also do my damnedest to not run garbage Freight. Being leased on to the company I'm with and running a lot of contract Freight really helps that.

That said, I'm currently paying $1,000 a month in rent for a junkie 53 ft that's a company trailer. Also I could use a big tax write-off this year as well.

My biggest hold backs are the price and it's all Steel so it's heavy.

Is he going to pay the trailer off & you make payments to him or is he taking your money to make the payment? If he's not financing it & the bank is still holding the note then what happens if he needs the money for something else instead of the trailer payment? The bank repos it & your sol.
