Old days of saw filers.
For a crosscut handsaw, they had a tool like pliers that had a v squeeze mouth. Clamp saw in a hand saw vise.Clamp a tooth, squeeze the experienced amount, and sort of bend it outward, Move to next tooth, do it the other way. Called opening the saw. Then go down; tooth by EO tooth with a 3 cornered file. Stroke 1, stroke 2, maybe stroke 3, move to next tooth. This was from one side. Turn it around in the "hand saw vise" and repeat.
When done, you could hold it by the handle in front of you, drop a small needle in to the gap of the teeth, and it would slide on down the length, Like in track... And would whacks a good oak 2 x 4 into pieces....
Old man in West Point used to flag the trains on main street crossing manually. Had a hut for bad weather.Between trains, he sharpened hand saws. $.50 each then.

 

Sure and uses mineral blocks for elk. Survivors go off healthier....
