IMG_3342.jpeg Bought myself a 1978 K100 just to restore and got the cab titled today. Noticed no data plate on the bell housing so k was wondering if someone could decipher using the serial number off the block. I’m 99% sure it’s a 290, just wanted to confirm.

Look for a tag on the left front of the engine. Just behind where the belts are.

That number looks way short to me.
We used to be able to open an account under Cummins Quick Serve. Put your info in and it would provide all the info.
If you have a KW parts person worth their salt you can give them the truck serial number. They can then tell you all the information on the engine that came in that truck. Is it the same engine? Ask the wise old owl.

N: 4 valve head, which you have. T: turbo charged? C: After cooled? Big cam or small cam? You can answer that with a picture of the cam follower boxes in front of the starter.
It was common to bump them up to 350 or 400's Look at the tag on top of the injection pump. What does that say it is?

My avatar pic was a 1977 and had a Big Cam 1 in it, Look on the left side rear of the engine for about a 2" X 3" pad, your engine serial number should be stamped there.

Appears to be a few numbers short on the serial number.

look for the tag on top of the pump, get the numbers and call your local pump shop to see what horsepower it is calibrated for. Or you can post the numbers here and I will call and see what they tell me.

Does it say BIG CAM on the block between the oil pan and cam followers? Does it have a compression release lever on the front of the engine…?

9 out of every 10 vintage Cummins I see have that dang build tag missing. If’s like they get overhauled and the tags get removed because now its a big “hot rod” secret as to what it is or was. Lol. Looks like there may be another 9 at end of that number. 6 digits makes more sense if it is a small cam. Another place the serial numbers were stamped was on a pad on LH side of block just under the front head behind the air compressor. May be able to see it if equipt with the cummins one cyl. comp and no ac comp in way. But with the bigger Bendix comp it may be hidden.

Thank you sir! And I’ll definitely check that out. So much I want to learn about this truck with so little info! The whole thing used to be painted a real pretty metallic blue head to toe. Even the leafs were painted! But I will check that out thank you!
