I have six vintage trucks and a ‘99’FL 60. I have them all registered Antique and for 26,000. Pull loaded trailers all the time with my stuff on them. No cdl required. No logs. As free as a retiree in a big Provost bus pulling a travel trailer behind it. Regular cheap liability insurance. I carry a copy of the regs and internal reg. codes that the TxDPS big bears use in every truck. They always learn something new when they pull me over. Lol.

My understanding is you will need to go to school to get your CDL. Gone are the days when you would just take any old truck and get your license. If you have to do that, find one that has a manual for the test. It does sound like you have any problems driving one, it's just having one to test in.

I've already been to the schooling. Attended Boces Vo-Tech in New York back in '95

That is not the same. Since 2021there is a new entry level driver training program that all new CDL applicants must complete prior to be allowed to take the road test. Because you had a full CDL previously you may be exempt, but it may be complicated by the fact that license was from a different state.

Here is a link to the ELDT training requirements for you to review.

Like @brian991219 said below me, you now have to do it at a school, even though you've had a CDL before.

Sorry to say this Brian and Bean, but you both are incorrect. I provided my old CDL information, they found the records and I walked out of there with my CDL permit. Just got home and seen your responses.

Here in 14 days, I can go take the road test and finish the process.

Now the question is, can I get the freightliner up to snuff and just do it properly....Hmmmm

Reread what I posted before you say I am wrong. I am a CDL examiner and I said first; (bold added for emphasis since you obviously missed it the first time)

Then earlier today I said (bold added since you missed it even the second time); Read the word MAY, I didn't say definitely, just that it may be complicated because your earlier CDL was not from the same state.

Don't come on here and then disrespect those of us giving advice, be grateful someone was willing to take the time out of their day to answer your question. I am a professional consultant and do this as a free service for the industry, to give accurate advice, not to be called out as if I don't know what I am talking about because a poster can't be bother to fully read and understand the response.

Final note, since you had a CDL previously and have been exempted from the ELDT, inquire if your auto only restriction will also be grandfather away since anyone that took the skills test prior to 2015 wasn't subject to the auto only even if they took the test in an automatic equipped truck. You may not need to worry about the restriction at all.

I didn't mean any disrespect at all, and sorry you took it that way. But it was also the way it was posted by Bean....

Again, No disrespect at all was meant.

Bean Jr. and brian991219 Thank this.

Fair enough. I am glad you don't have to do the ELDT since you previously held a CDL. Good luck, and with any good fortune you may be able to skip the auto restriction. Let us know how you make out.
