Buying a truck advice?

What kind of work are you planning to do?

 

You can get a good used 1986 cabover for $8,000 road- ready and lease it to many companies with no age limit. That way you are an owner op and pay cash for it. If you make money great, if not, you don't have the bank knocking on your door. Once you get going you can then up to a newer truck. However, a 1986 is all mechanical and you don't have DEF, can use paper logs, can repair everything yourself and not be burdened with all the expensive electronic repairs requiring dealer computers/software. There are many online for sale. Not getting into high monthly truck payments should be a good idea with the low freight rates and the continual influx of foreign-owned companies hauling cheap freight putting a hurt all owner-ops/company drivers. $100,000 is really a lot of money for a used Cascadia or any used truck for that matter.

For someone with (I assume) no experience with trucks and or maintenance of trucks this is likely to end poorly…but at least the bank probably won’t be on them. I say this as someone who has made piles of money running cheap old trucks. I grew up on a farm and have worked on anything and everything since I was big enough to hold a wrench…. I feel like running old trucks is kind of a lifestyle though. You have to look at things every weekend and plan on giving some tlc. After a couple years you have something that you can trust to go coast to coast…unless you bought a big pos. If you just want to turn the key on Monday morning and park on Friday night then buy a brand new one or know someone who will be reasonable to work on the truck any time it needs it.

Just buy a truck, it doesn't matter make, year, or color... It's gonna be a money making machine!!! The ITS load board is filled with so much money these days at 41 I'm fixing to retire at 42!!! My pillow cases smells like Benjamin's!!!

Listen to what we say, friend. There was a time when a used truck was an easy way to get into trucking. I did. Today, a used truck is a nightmare waiting to happen. I never thought I'd say this, but new is the only way to go, and at a 1/4 mil, you BETTER have a steady haul. Waiting on the load board with a new truck won't cut it. One gal here, bought a 2021(?) IH, had a vibration( wonder what ever happened to her?) and literally threw thousands in repairs above the purchase price, and will surely do her in. The only other way, is like one said, get an antique to start with. I saw'r a '86 KWhopper Aerodyne, in great shape, like $15grand. It was a heck of a truck. If you simply won't listen, Lord knows I didn't, your best bet today in a used truck is a Kenworth. The W900 has been around for 60 years, for a reason, just the best trucks made.
