Facebook falls into the category, "the best of times, and the worst of times"( etc) It's merely a product of our modern society, and the best part,, like the CB of yore, it still has a power off button. Fact is, it could very well be the "CB" radio of modern times. I was one of the last holdouts on FB, finally gave in, mostly for family postings, and old friends, some gone, I never would have known otherwise. FB opened the floodgates to all the weirdos out there, instead of sitting harmlessly in a basement with crazy views, all of a sudden, they have 400 "followers", all in the same boat. I joined a couple groups, one about vintage trucking, I thought might be fun,,,,,was pretty bad. People that had nothing to do with trucking had to get their feelings out there. One person, posted a picture of a Nazi sign on a cabover from the trucking strike years ago, I took offense to that, and the moderator was from Israel! I said, how can you allow that? He removed it, but not after a flurry of activity.
Like I say, it's here to stay, and like the CB, use it for what you will, and turn it off. I found a Jeep on Marketplace, 2 towns over, I never would have known otherwise. CL? Ebay? All BS. Thing about FB, is pictures usually don't lie, and once a "member", in most cases, you can speak directly to the seller. Old trucks. You guys want old trucks, FB Marketplace is THE place. You name it, it's sitting in a field in Kansas, and just about everyone has access to it. We are so intertwined with computers today, to be without will surely cause a major panic, something we don't want to think about, but should. TTR is and always has been, truly an oasis in amongst the muck.![]()

I would argue that yes companies have normalised that double the work for the same pay as 10 years ago and that their indoctrination of that mindset has been successful.
Thats not the same thing as saying its ok or normal or desireable, simply an observation of reality.
Too many people simply lack the individuality and mental fortitude to question what seems to be the status quo (see comment about indoctrination)
Its the same kind of thing that happens when genuinely smart practices for safety are taught as absolutes, you get alcoa proudly proclaiming that every driver banned for not wearing every one of their ppe items at all times on the plant is the same as them saving a life. 0 reflection on the reality of the situation, safety as religion.
This is just the moneygrubbing beancounter narrative side of that coin.blairandgretchen, SmallPackage, Numb and 2 others Thank this. -

Being as generous as possible to the people that were defending the company line of paying peanuts, i would like to also point out that between wage stagnation and inflation since the 80s and therefore higher than ever cost of living, those entering the workforce today or career swapping later in life, even a terrible wage in trucking may still look decent when the comparison entry level is a less stable hourly job that may not even have the hours or wage to match 1000$ a week.
It is sometimes worth reminding yourself that the past 45 years have been one of constantly lifting the ladder so that it is more and more difficult to even get ON the lowermost rungs of the stability ladder.
Dont misunderstand me here, opportunity for people at large is still there, in SOME ways, even greater than before, but where do you start when you dont have the time or money (and in many cases the mental ability) to afford the training to get into a decent job?blairandgretchen, bryan21384 and OldeSkool Thank this.
