May Trucking Offer

    I'm heading to orientation in Brooks, OR in 2 weeks for May Trucking. My chief concern is they don't have a terminal in California, I live in L.A. Is it practical to work for them? Recruiter said they do a lot of business in Los Angeles so they could find places for me to park. Also, it's for flatbed. What questions are important to ask besides: tarp pay, incentives, drive and home time? Got an offer from Western Express who has terminal near me in Fontana, should I consider them more because of this even though I'd rather go with May? Any answers appreciated. Thanks.

    Make May put you in contact with May flatbed or van drivers in L.A. Then ask those drivers to describe their pay, schedule, anything else you want to know about the job. Don't waste your time asking "do you get enough miles, is the pay enough, do you like the company? Ask How many paid miles did you get last week? How much money did you make last week? What was your schedule last week. Where do you park. Words from a recruiter are seldom reliable about anything. Recruiters are usually kept VERY separate from the rest of the company, if they even work at the company.

    Make a list of things you want to know and don't work for any company until you have talked to current working drivers on the account you will work if you are hired at the company you are considering. It's easier to ask a recruiter, but the answers from recruiters are worthless. It's harder to get answers from the working drivers, but the answers are worth more. Before I retired I found it more useful to work for a company with a yard near where I live so maintenance could be done to the truck while I was home, instead of sitting around a truck stop or at a company shop for no pay while maintenance was done. L.A. is such a massive pain to drive anywhere even if a company has a terminal in L.A. it could still be hours from your home. That commute time comes out of your home-time.

    I live west of Portland and have never seen a May flatbed. Must be a new account? I’d ask a lot of questions first.

    This would be my first trucking job as I have no experience, and May is the only ones giving me a shot beside Western Express and Shneider. I really need to know if not having a terminal in my state is a red flag.

    I don't have many options available to me as someone fresh out of CDL school. I will contact May to see if I can find any L.A. drivers, thank you.

    my company is in Iowa and I live in GA no terminals here. Lots of drivers are like this as well. Sure it's nice to have a terminal nearby so you don't need to find parking but it's all part of the job. Main thing is finding a safe secure place to park. May have to pay for a spot. Personally I'd go with May or Schneider over WE. Main thing is get your year in, keep your reccord clean and you will open a lot more doors for you on down the line.

    I doubt they are going to find a place for you to park, unless they are still sharing the Fontana yard with US Express or whoever it was. If they don't already have a place designated for you to park, I doubt they are going to waste their time trying to figure it out. It's not like you'll be able to park your personal vehicle at a Distribution Center, or even if there were a customer who would allow you to park there, it probably wouldn't be secure. If parking near your home is a priority, you should really make sure that they figure it out before you waste your time going up to Brooks.

    From my experience working with May years ago, I believe they are set up like every other mega fleet out there. There is a crazy amount of turnover. There is no incentive to stay there past a few years, because their pay caps out low and early. You are a number to be churned out and replaced, so I think they're going to tell you whatever it takes to get you into orientation and then string you along. I don't want you to get the impression that they're a bad company, I enjoyed my short time there and the people I worked with were nice.

    They're also not a flatbed fleet. If they are getting into that segment, I would be skeptical about them having enough freight to keep you moving. Hopefully you get to keep the same trailer all the time, because running around hunting for trailers that are in good shape was one of the bad things about the company.
