Don't need to go to Alaska ... retired to Idaho this year, 15 miles from nearest one horse town. Northern Lights and the Milky Way from my front porch.

I hear lots of people are moving there and changing the state in negative ways. Have you noticed a difference?

BTW, those sites are absolutely amazing.

I can understand the despair, I get crabby if I miss any of the 3 stoplights to Walmart. "Alaska" sounds a bit drastic, probably because aside from the N&S poles, it's the last uninhabited refuge, if Ice Road Truckers taught me anything( which it didn't) If a recluse is an option, one need not go to such extremes. Lots of places to "go missing" here in the mountains, and people are doing it. Fact is, I've even considered it, but not quite ready yet. Timing is the key. I go to the store early, and with home delivery, someday you may never have to leave the house. In 2023, Americans drove an astonishing 3.263 TRILLION miles,, a 2.1% increase over 2022, so it's only going to get worse.

In response to the topic, I am happy with my dogs. I am already such a hermit. Society (some people) are like flies. All they do is eat, crap & bother people.

However, if I move, it won't be north. I live in north Louisiana and I'm already too far north now. I'll head south to the Virgin Islands, etc.
I told a guy yesterday, "remember that little cool snap we had a couple of weeks ago in the 40"s? That was my winter. I'm ready for spring!"

Man, if you've never been up to the sub-arctic before, you have no_figgin_idea what you are getting yourself into. Are you REALLY ready for winters of -40°F and a 40 mph wind?? Roads that turn to mud in the spring for a month or more? Oh, what about the mosquitoes??? Also, $7.50/gallon for diesel on a good day???
    Really????

I've heard the mosquitoes up in Alaska are big enough to fly away with your dog
