I blow them off. I used to try to be nice, but now oh hell no.
Anyway, I had to stop outside of KC on my way for home time and parked at a casino for my ten. This raggedy dude came towards me and I was "oh here we go", but I was in a good mood because home time looming and all so I decided to hear him out and piss in his wheaties when he was done with his spiel. He asked for some change and i had some quarters in my cup holder so I decided to give them to him. I kid you not, he didn't want them, but wanted pennies. He gave the quarters back and I gave him all the pennies I had. He was addicted to penny slots. Is that a thing? How would you even make money?

The poor guy has such issues that he doesn't realize he could turn those quarters into twenty five pennies each.

Yep, penny slots are a thing, and yes you can win.

We used to visit the casino over in Charles Town, WVA. I'd sit and play the penny slots all night. Would win, couple hundred bucks here and there. Your not going to hit huge jack pots, but you can win, and more often, just smaller amounts.

Said Casino at the time only offered slots, and horse races. I don't do horse racing, but I enjoy slots on the rare times I go into a casino. I could go in with a 100 bucks and play most the night, win back my seed money, and still have a bit left over to grab breakfast on the way home. A couple of times, won enough to pay for a hotel room.

I'm a cautious gambler when it comes to casinos though. I don't spend more than I take in with me, and I cut my losses once I show a profit. I'm boring like that. ;)

I liken penny slots to scratch tickets, the $1 ones. Prizes aren't super big, but 500 bucks is better than zip.

I have nothing to add about the homeless dude, other than you probably made his day by giving away the pennies. I used to help folks out now and then with some spare change, but after getting yelled at multiple times for not "giving enough", I decided it's easier to just be a #######, and far less drama. If anyone is going to drink my money away, it'll be me ######. ;)

Incredible. sad. I was spending a weekend with a grade school friend, she moved to riverside when it was still all citrus and avocado orchards, we took a hike out it the nearby wilderness and packed a lunch. She said she wanted me to meet the "hermit" that was out there. We found him , im guessing he was maybe forty something. But everyone looks old to kids. Anyway , he offered us beers, and we laughed and said no thank you. I offered him a banana , and was thrown for a loop when he said , no sorry I cant, "no teeth" . Your story Fear and your comment Flat, reminded me of that.
Hows a guy get beer, but doesnt know kids cannot drink and you don't need teeth to eat a banana? Plus he had a tent, he didn't live in a cave. I did think about showing him to peel the banana, but even with no bad gut feelings , i felt it was time to go so we did.
I am not comfortable with beggars or any stranger getting within arms reach , but it depends on the vibes i guess. I read a story how one walked up to a person who was handing a dollar out of the car window, and she was stabbed to death by the beggar.
That is very weird about that guy Fear , because slots don't take change /coins these days.

Well I guess some slots to , sirscrapntruckalot has seen them.
There are more penny slots than others, but the don't take pennies..LOL

This was years ago, easily a decade since I've been in to that casino in W.Va. If I recall they did the card thing, you put money on and swipe it. Actual coin use I haven't seen since the 90s. Everyone uses the "Put cash on card" method at the casinos I go to. Hell even theme parks have gone cashless.

I now hear they do card games(21, Poker, etc) and some other table games.

Far as the "vibe"...I'm the same way.

Sadly a lot of truly homeless folks do have mental issues/addictions/etc.

I remember a homeless guy I saw at a Jack in the Box when I lived in Tucson. Dude was grimy, and as dirty as one could be. Think Pigpen from Charlie Brown, but a old skinny white guy. He was ordering food with the little bit of money he had(I covered the rest, this was before I developed my Grinch like heart. He would put his hand up on the side of his face you were on of him. Wouldn't make eye contact. Nice enough guy, but you could tell he had some issues. He didn't ask for help, which is why I paid for his meal.

Some will call me a heartless jerk, and I'm ok with that. When I do help folks, it's those that in my opinion truly need it. An they generally appreciate the help.

Yes , I understand that and I feel the same.
I like that man calling himself Cracker. I like all those whitey, pasty face, MAYonaise...LOL
I believe in helping others, but maybe I am jaded but i don't think so , when I call most charities a scam. I have no doubts most of the money does not make it to their promised places.
I have my own charities. So I know who I am helping.

When some bum walks up to you ask the bum for some change before he says anything.
That catches them off guard :D

The saddest thing is that a large percentage of the homeless in the USSA are actually mentally defective and should be in homes getting proper treatment but we're too busy paying the way for millions of criminal "migrants" instead.

I'm (technically) homeless. For just $19 a month you can help a retired trucker, live in a van down by the river.
If i go go back into Driving, do i go from reTired to reTread ?

One morning, early, I was at the Flying J on the west side of Dallas......just as you come into town.
I went inside for some coffee and when I came out some dude walked up to me and asked me for a dollar. I said no, and walked on. As I walked, the better angel said, "Dude, you make $150,000 a year with this truck, and you couldn't come up with a dollar?"

I'm not a bible thumper by any stretch of the imagination, but here's something to consider......

For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.

    Matthew 25:40-45

So, I give a dollar when I can.
