The trainer was driving the truck? If the OP needs a trainer to teach him to drive and maneuver an 80k vehicle with extreme caution then maybe he should pick another line of work. Sorry, but that's common sense.

Second day first load, 75% trainers fault.

Op needs to take some responsibility and read the green book on securement before doing any open deck work. You should have been able to tell the trainer that it wasn’t enough securement. When in doubt add more.

I’m glad you weren’t scared of the load poking along the highway and holding up the world but until you get to know how it will behave slower is better than on its side. It’s not a race until your name is on the door.

    Anecdote:
Picking up sheetrock I watched a Western Driver struggle to tarp his load.
I offered assistance, only to learn his trainer was sleeping in the cab, and that his trainer only had 6 months experience.
Often companies don’t take training seriously and use the opportunity to team drive, the trainer is paid for the miles you drive.

    Question:
How much research did you do regards load securement and required driving habits prior to taking the wheel ?

This is a tough love, hard lesson of life.

    This is an opinion.
Unless we witnessed the securement and driving we cannot make any determinations of cause.
The first bundle is the foundation of good securement.
    How many straps?
    How tight were the straps?
Was the deck clear of debris?
Was the lumber wet or icy?
Had the driver/trainer performed a sharp stop prior to leaving the yard, then checked securement.

OP is learning and accepting his responsibilities.
The Silver Lining might be that this thread provides future drivers wisdom and guidance.

The push may have been the load shifting.
We are all making educated guesses with limited information.
Hopefully, others can learn learn from this situation.
A common practice is to take pictures of securement prior to tarping.

If someone is going to flatbed it would behoove them to read the little green book the company gives to you instead of copying what someone else does. Lots of “experienced” drivers only have the same year of experience they keep repeating over and over.
