I was told I could do my own when I started 7 or so years ago. I was surprised too but I've done it every year since then. I have no formal training in inspections.
I get the stickers from Amazon usually. Nowadays I buy a pack of 3 or 10 or whatever. They are JJ Keller, same you can get at a truck stop.

The cvip manual is a free download from the service alberta website. I have a copy on my phone.
To apply for a cvip lic in alberta, you need your journeyman cert, a criminal background check from the rcmp or local police force, from you area of residence, and of course the credit card to pay.Albertaflatbed, AModelCat, Oxbow and 3 others Thank this. -
You can order the forms with stickers from JJ Keller and some truck stops will carry them but they're not as common as they were 20 years ago.
You don't need a sticker but you do need a copy of the completed form if you don't have one.
I never used the stickers and just kept the completed form in my documents binder. Made it a little easier for the bear and the stickers never made it a year anyway due to elemental exposure.
In order be qualified to do inspections you need to have some sort of professional experience and that's it. No license. No permit. No school. Just previous professional experience.
Perfectly legal to do your own for the FMCSA. However, some states require a state inspection no matter what. The feds will accept a state inspection as your annual if you're in a state that requires them.wis bang, ElmerFudpucker, Oxbow and 2 others Thank this. -

It’s amazing how many people don’t know the regulations and just assume you have to pay someone to do an inspection for you.
86scotty, ElmerFudpucker, singlescrewshaker and 1 other person Thank this. -
let’s start with the basics.
Key Points of 49 CFR § 396.17 (Annual Inspection Requirement):
- All commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) must undergo an inspection at least once every 12 months.
- The inspection must cover components listed in Appendix G of 49 CFR Part 396 (which includes brakes, tires, lights, steering, etc.).
- The inspection must be conducted by a qualified inspector, as defined in 49 CFR § 396.19.
- A copy of the inspection report or decal must be kept on the vehicle or available in company records for at least 14 months.
- If a state inspection program is equivalent to FMCSA standards, it may satisfy the requirement.
Here is what qualified means …
General Qualifications for a Vehicle Inspector (49 CFR § 396.19)
A person is qualified to perform annual inspections if they:
- Understand the inspection requirements of Part 393 and Appendix G of Part 396 (which lists required vehicle components).
- Can identify defective components.
- Know how to perform an inspection properly.
- Have training or experience in commercial vehicle maintenance, which can come from:
- A combination of training and/or experience totaling at least 1 year in vehicle maintenance, repair, or inspection.
- Experience working as a mechanic, inspector, or manufacturer in commercial vehicle maintenance.
- Completion of a state or industry-sponsored training program that qualifies them to inspect vehicles.
That said, it is rather stupid to just put an inspection sticker on a truck and act like it was done legally. The problem is there already been a few court cases involving accidents and trucking companies where they falsified the inspection reports (which can be considered a felony) which was discovered by the ambulance chasing lawyers. One of them there was a huge settlement because of the lack of inspections, it put the owners of the company in a lot of crap, the judge pierced the llc vail and attached all their personal assets including the retirement from the company to the case. They lost everything, it was liquidated by court order because all the false documentation involved.wis bang, brian991219, hope not dumb twucker and 3 others Thank this.
