Backroading down to SW AR Thursday and started noticing a little tick in the engine. By the time I got to my delivery it was pretty loud. Cancelled my next load and got home. It was a loud, angry beech by that time.

Dropped the oil and found a few teeth. Pulled the front cover Friday morning. Bull gear, idler, and cam gear trashed. Oh the joy.

Parts should be here late tonight. Another tooth missing on the idler or cam gear and it would have been a mess. Very fortunate it's no worse.

Any of you folks seen a can like this, or tin with this design? Trying to date an old homestead I found a couple years ago in NF.
Wife and I hiked back in there yesterday, and found a few new pieces.

Later homesteads I've always found car parts of some sort. No car parts anywhere near here, and it basically inaccessable by vehicle.

I was figuring 1850-1870 time frame, but this looks like a fuel can of some sort.

Hadn't thought of that. Definitely a possibility.

The vent is actually brass or copper. I think the wife got a better pic, I'll ask. It also looks like there was a hinge below for something? Not sure there

I remember cans that had hinges for handles. Usually paints or chemicals?
