I see your point but I see it different, it all depends on a lot of other factors, if wages go up above inflation with lower taxes, and we see other reliefs, then we can see more of a demand for quality goods, not the cheap junk that we see now.

No matter what, freight has to be moved, we are a the consumptionism country.

It’s a complicated issue that I didn’t want to dive into too deeply.
There’s also unintended consequences with every action. Bring back clothing manufacturers and we’ll be needing those cargo ships to bring in cheap labor for example.
My relatives worked the sweater mills in New Bedford, Ma..wasn’t a glorious life.

Personally I think we’ve lost more jobs in this country to technology. Jobs that paid a decent wage but will never return. Another example.. Reading meters for the power company where I grew up paid well back in the mid 80’s those jobs are gone forever.

Times have changed and I’m glad to be getting close to my expiration date :)

OK, I’m keeping this outside of a political realm, but we have a good old fashion game of poker going on and China just got caught holding a pair of 2’s. They’ll cave soon. I don’t see this lasting long at all….How you ask? We put a 90 day temporary tariff pause on all the other countries except for China. And increased theirs to 125%. Which even at that rate still leaves them in a positive trading position that they can’t seem to understand. But what this does is allow us to bring in goods from these other countries and pressure China to come to the negotiating table. They have been completely isolated in this trading battle.

When all this works itself out, which should happen sooner rather than later, look out for a demand in shipments. Moat all countries are now willing to deal with the exception of a not China. As stubborn as they are, they’ll have to negotiate soon and it’ll be over.

I think people forget we have the largest economy. If we stuff buying all the imports then they don’t have a job. Look at freightliner and international building most of the trucks now in Mexico. Who will buy them in numbers we do to keep the Mexican factory going ?? It won’t be Canada and Mexico.

All the cheaper stuff we import from china and around the world who is going to buy it all ? Nobody, they will be forced to close the factories or lay people off. If Americans don’t want pay the extra price for imports then they won’t sell much. They could take their tariffs and maybe Trump will take his tariffs off

What will Canada do if Americans stop buying vehicles or the parts used to build cars and trucks because of the tariffs?? They will probably have lay people off.

"There’s also unintended consequences with every action." You got that right. Like when the gubberment cracked down on the opioid pill mills (and rightfully so) and created the heroin crisis. While on that subject, the gubberment only talks about the supply and stopping it. What about the demand? Without demand there would not be suppliers.

The tariffs will have little if any long-term impact, just like the brief spike in freight rates during covid didn't last. For various reasons the media fills up with temporary experts on every topic and those "experts" project what happened in the last 3 days into the next 500 years and declare the end of the world. This pattern is repeated if tariffs increase/decrease, immigration increases/decreases, if the R party wins/lose, if the D party wins/loses, egg prices spike for a month or two, etc. All the media does is change the reason the world is ending every single day so they can keep announcing "the world is ending, tune in for more ads."

The tariffs seem very similar to a VAT. Seems to me the tariffs should be tied to the currency exchange rates with each Country. Constantly adjusting as rates change.

I think the first that will hit for the good is gonna be the flat bed guys. As a dry van we might get his on the lower end before turning it around. I think it will be solid after the first year is over.

You clearly dont know me. Ha Ha I paid 350 for one 7 years ago. I'd gladly replace the stove and washing machines for something as well. I don't mind spending money!
