Doesn’t bother me at all! Two of my brother-in-law’s are massive star car enthusiast, the ones nibbling at it. Not sure if he’ll take it or not, He said he flat out, doesn’t have a use for it right now, he just wants it….. I might run it through the end of the year yet, we’ll see

Yeah i don't have faith in the new stuff either. If it were me, I'd put a n14 in it. That would be my first pick. But if you want to stay cat power, I'd try a 3408. You're gonna have to make sure your transmission can withstand the torque of a larger engine like that.cke, Kyle G., broke down plumber and 2 others Thank this.

3408 are cool, but too thirsty for me! 3.5 mpg doesn’t really appeal to me. This 3406 is producing about 625 hp, getting 4.5-5 mpg, and I like it, ran an N14 for several years at 460, similar mpg, don’t really want anything less than that as far as hpcke, Kyle G., The N.P.R.y guy and 4 others Thank this.

That's another heavy engine, very expensive to build. But it is cool , never late with a V8 was the old saying.cke, Kyle G., The N.P.R.y guy and 5 others Thank this.

I haven't seen many out in the wild working, but head gaskets were always the weak spot. If they weren't seeping coolant around them, it's probably because you were out.ElmerFudpucker, cke, Kyle G. and 6 others Thank this.

Dump a 16.8 sisu V12 quad turbo , lighter than a C18 700hp 2212tq 2100rpm from factory and epa compliant . If'n ya got a itch .

What do you haul? 625 hp is getting up there. Definitely nothing to sneeze at. You might think about a kta600 then. Way better than a 3408 in mpg. It all depends on how you drive it of course. It is very possible to get up to almost 7 mpg on those things, but about averages around your 3406. But WAY more power.cke, broke down plumber, Kyle G. and 2 others Thank this.

While I understand the draw of the old engines, it's hard to beat the power curves the last of E-model Cats. The 550 made that at 1800 rpm, hence the rating. But it made over 550hp everywhere between roughly 1400 rpm and 1800 rpm, peaking around 590hp @1600rpm. They were definite hill eaters with that hump in the curve.
Running with a buddy one night, I decided to see if I could run over Elk Mountain EB without shifting. We were running 75 mph to make time, I don't think it would have done it without that speed at the bottom. I was right against 80k# in a carhauler, and it did it. Just barely, but it did it.
We had a sister truck that was still at the original 475 rating, I'd be one car heavier and still out of radio range before I'd top the hill leaving Baker. LOL. Boss asked me to quit that because he was tired of the crying from the other driver.
IIRC, the pre-egr 14L Series 60's had similar humps in their curves and were also beasts that drove nothing like the peakier 12.7's.cke, broke down plumber, Kyle G. and 7 others Thank this. -
Caught this in Bosselman Travel Plaza Grand Island.
Driver was sleeping, so left him a note and sent pics to Trucking Company.
Hopefully they use it as a teaching moment for all their drivers.Attached Files:
