Had a doctor appointment Friday for 3:45 pm. Was getting ready to leave just after 3:00 pm and thought I left something in the garage, from earlier when I was picking the dandelions and closed the door and went into the house to get ready. Went back out to retrieve what I had left in there...went to close the door and screech...oh crap. Thought I had tripped the sensor eye. Started trying again...screech..realized something was amiss. The door panel was hanging down on the one end. Called the wife out to hit the switch while I tried to guide the panel so the door could close...nope, it popped off the track and there it sat. Had to cancel the doctor appointment....search frantically for a 'real' 24/7 garage door repair place to come out on a Friday, after hours, found one...and had to pay emergency fee, and scheduled the tech to come out that night between 8-10 pm. Sooo spend the next few hours moving some of the heavier equipment out of the front of the garage so it could be worked on, covered those things with a tarp because we were expecting storms (and we got them an hour after covered). Tech showed up about 9:50 pm. Assessed the damage, original estimate was $680...and then the 199.00 emergency fee....then, later, we realized my springs on the door were original to the garage, and hadn't been tensioned in 25 years, so we had to pony up for new springs (2 year warranty ones, cheap) for an additional 110.00. When he was done, I then had to move everything back in sometime between midnight and 1:00 am, I finished.
Did not see that day coming, nor that expense. I thought it was high. Asked how much it cost for a full new install, since 25 years ago I think it was like 1500-1700 for new install of the whole door. Said it's now $4,000 dollars. I didn't think the repair amount was so high any more. I can't complain, since other than one adjustment within 3 years of the original install, I had to have a service done because the track linkage connection bracket on the door was flimsy and had bent and was not allowing the door to close, because it would keep kicking it back open. Now I understand that the system needs to be checked every so often, other than just my lubing the rollers and hinges every so often, so I figure I got my money's worth out of the original cost and didn't screw up the door more to need a new install, so...live and learn. Should be good so if we sell, it's someone else's problem.
What a day.
