Over regulated corruption

    They're not cops in lots of states but cops do the same jobs along with the usual traffic enforcement with added powers of arrest. DOT and the police overlap often.

    The point is the inspectors have the ability to detain and arrest for infractions. No other industry is like that. Imagine getting arrested at and office job for failing an inspection or being put at of service because your lunch was to short.

    Yes I’m aware. Which is why I said if they’re just motor carrier enforcement they’re not cops. In South Dakota you can get hired on the enforcement side and then go through the academy and become a patrolman if you wish. Or you can stay not being a cop. My cousin worked at the port of entry at Elk Point for two years until he was old enough to attend the academy and get on with the highway patrol.

    What can someone be arrested for as part of an inspection? DUI like any other driver on the road? Acting stupid? What is something on the truck or trailer that can lead to arrest?

    If you are getting a ticket and or oos, then basically you are being arrested. You are no longer on the clock being paid to fix things. No other industry can do that. They cant make you work off the clock to fix what failed the inspection. Right you up and put it in your “permanent file” sure but They still have to pay you for the time. Trucking does not.

    They are a division of the state patrol and work hand and hand with our state troopers. Most of our civilian CVI's work at the scale houses while a few do roam and pull over commercial vehicles. As I stated earlier, if the Inspector is armed they are not a civilian CVI, but an actual State Trooper. The link you shared is for State troopers that want to become an inspector.

    Here is a link to a lawsuit that happened in our state while a civilian CVI pulled over a truck. The law has since changed and they can now stop a commercial vehicle for inspection. I should also add...they still can't pull you over for anything but an inspection and have no powers to arrest, but can write tickets.

    Thanks for clarifying but inspections are in fact being done by armed individuals. This isn't commonplace in any other industry that I'm aware of.
