If I get stuck on the road somewhere (God forbid),
    I rate motel pay.
    $22.00/hr for 8 hours.

I stay at any one of several hotel chains
which have an account with my outfit.
    Nice ones, too.
Holiday Inn, Days Inn, Red Roof Lodge,
Howard Johnson's, or Best Western to name just a few.
All paid by the company per account.
I just sign my name and check into my room.
I also get 10% to 20% off if I eat in the hotel restaurant.

My days of living out of a fiberglass broom closet for no money are long gone.
Been there, done that...got the t-shirt.
    Nuff' said on that score...

My last company had some extras for nights away.
We did 5 dollars per meal up to 3 a day.
12 dollars for each night out.
This was not perdiem, it was not ever listed under your income or pay anywhere. It was just money that would be added to your receipts at the end of the week with your tolls and such.

Look at Wal-Mart's hiring policy's, turnover rate, etc. and tell me they don't know a thing or two about driver retention.

To the OP, UPS, YRC, ABF, etc. the sleeper operations get a small amount of pay for sleeping. Some of the guys who run the line-huals that require they take 10 off get a small amount as well. Back in Oct. when I got stranded in Limon, CO with a bunch of UPS drivers, during a blizzard, they were discussing their pay. All were paid from the time the started that morning until the end of their shift. The next morning, while the highway was still closed, they were put on the clock as soon as the started their trucks (they had to call it in), plus UPS reimbursed them for the hotel rooms which was funny because 7 drivers (6 male 1 female) had 3 rooms, but they all got reimbursed, plus they were reimbursed 50% of their meals.

Shoot, most of us have to fight to get paid for all the work we do, forget about getting paid to sleep!!! ( Specially if your unlucky enough to work for the Knight family!)

What's "TRUCKING"? Getting used and abused with no pay for company directed tasks? I wouldn't be sleeping in a truck for giggles - it would be necessary for performing my job under direction from the carrier so yes, I would expect to be paid or I would not do it - hence the reason I do not do it..

This is similar at most good jobs where sets are involved either LTL or parcel. I had one instance like this within the first year I was here and this is how it went..

I sat behind a massive fatal accident on the Ohio Pike for 9 hours total stuck between exits - I was paid my normal hourly rate after the first hour since we give up one hour of wait so it was 8 hours of pay. Once I was rolling, I was back on mileage till I made my destination where the TM took me to a hotel paid by the company - I was not paid to sleep there but OTR was still fresh in my mind and I felt like a king plus they paid me 8 hours to sit in my truck. When my 10 was up, a management dude picked me up and brought me back to the terminal where my set was pre-hooked and I was ready to roll. I went to another hub and worked for about an hour till I had 2 loads and home I went.

Even though I whine and moan about my job constantly, I remember the OTR and am thankful that I'm now going on 7 years of employment at Con-way.. I even have a clean assigned truck now that has been broken down for the last three weeks so I can't drive it plus it's 300 miles away..lol.. All kidding aside, I understand this is a very good driving job..

If its more than overnight on the road we get company hotels as well. Every terminal has one nearby and if none is available we chose one and get reimbursed. I actually prefer OTR the way we run. Rarely am I out weekends. Those times are usually East to West coast runs. The longest trip I have had in 2 years was 11 nights and that included a 2 night reset in a hotel.

The past 2 weeks I have run 4 dedicated out and back loads. 3 were to N Chicago and one to Plaquemine La. No more than 2 nights in the truck at a time and around 6200 miles. I will gross around $3,000 those 2 weeks and I didn't have to drive all night. One of my rest stops was at a Casino. Those runs are nice because there is no appointment on the delivery. I love not having to set an alarm clock.

I don't think i could do LTL line haul overnight. Sure you get home time but what good is it if you have to sleep during the day.

If more companies done what walmart has done for the drivers there would be no need for recruiters as once hired the would retire ... And I know a few drivers for Walmart and they will not talk bout pay but looking at there homes ,cars, toys they do pretty good and I am glad they have the chance to do what they love and be PAID for what they do .....
