Pretty sure a lot of people skip that step. I remember it sticking out because I have never had to do it before. But again it was longer than two days ago so it’s a bit fuzzy

There used to be a guy named @pushbroom around here. He was sharp as a tack on this stuff

I always let it rest over night, retorque next day at whatever ft lb, then do whatever degree it calls for. Now my last one, I used SS shims, and the head bolts were all still right at the torque from the night before. Me thinks it's the copper shims that settle overnight more than head gasket crush, but who knows? Any other time, I'd always have a few that weren't as tight the next day. I do know that copper shims are usually good for about .002" crush, but never thought it might happen at initial install.

I work up to final torque spec, then run through all once again at final spec.

I usually still find center head bolts turn just a bit more after settling a day.

The mechanic equivalent of slapping straps and saying "That ain't going anywhere". I'm a firm believer in also revisiting them after a few thermal cycles, a pita, but better safe than sorry.

I forgot all about that guy until you mentioned him. I don't see how he kept all that knowledge in his head. Russ either.

I've got an old engine in the shop right now. Book says run up hot for an hour. Then it says to pull the valve covers while still warm and go through the head bolt torque sequence and back off each bolt a quarter turn and retorque, one at a time. Never heard of doing that before.
