To some degree. I definitely won't miss the long days or taking calls at all kinds of weird hours to make stuff happen. I also appreciate the idea of being able to take a vacation and not have to worry about someone losing me business. But, it's more that the new folks made me a hell of an offer, and I'm taking over an underserved market. The opportunity I'm stepping into is significantly higher with significantly less competition. Combining that with better benefits, and it's logically the right call. But I've spent a not insignificant amount of my adult life doing this- longer than my time in Military and law enforcement- and so it's almost a little sad to leave it behind.

Which is not to say that it isn't the right move for me and my family, and that it isn't something I'm extremely excited about.

You just summed up why I don't want to be a broker. If not for this I've considered it as a fall back if/when I get tired of the road.

This is not directed at you but I get the feeling from a lot of brokers I talk to on a regular basis that they think carriers are generally scum. I mean, I don't blame them, many are. But then I think about my freedoms. My phone doesn't ring at night. Or at least I'm not obligated to answer it, even under load. I just drive home when I want a vacation. I don't think twice. I've taken a third of the last year off. Whenever I want to work I look at the boards and usually have work within the hour. And I'm never obligated to solve other people's problems.

To be clear I'm just making a comparison here. So many brokers tell me how they work 24/7 and fight so hard to keep business.

Hopefully your new gig is a little bit less stressful.

I'd stay driving except I've developed a possible health issue that has at least temporarily sidelined my truck ownership. I've been successfully self employed before but gave it to my ex wife and started driving over five years ago. Before that was 30+ years of sales and sales management so I'm not intimidated by the thought of having to look for customers. Plus just bought a nice plot of land and I enjoy being on it, so even though I know it's going to be demanding, I want to stay in trucking.

Nah, I get it. It's honestly easy to get pretty jaded with the industry as a broker. There's so much stuff that's beyond your control that it starts getting screwy. And especially in a prolonged down cycle, where rates are depressed and you have to get extra competitive, which often means hiring even more bottom of the barrel carriers, and that just takes the fun out of it.

Still, it was a good run. Gotta get on the road early in the morning, though. Driving down to Kansas for training.
