I am at the tail end of my CDL training. Hope to be done and tested by end of next week. I've been with my employer for almost 18 years and they sent me to school for my CDL. I am still working in the warehouse but I ride along with one of our local drivers about once a week (local routes).

Almost every truck I see has "now hiring class A drivers" on the back. So if there is no driver shortage, why am I seeing this? Please explain. I'm ignorant here.

Because there is definitely a shortage of driver jobs that are worth keeping.

Same reason mcdonalds is always hireing. Most of those jobs pay dirt poor wages with worse insurance and poor/no hometime. They typically treat the driver worse then the dog turd they stepped on this morning. And as a result most drivers ditch them as soon as posible or leave the industry. And the actully good paying jobs are somewhat scarce. Also look at the turnover rates. I remimber i think it was knight at one point posted a 900% turnover rate

Good companies don't have to recruit drivers. Bad companies are always recruiting.
The only driver shortage I know of is a shortage of experienced competent drivers that won't tear up the equipment, aggravate the customers, and give a good day's work for a good day's pay. There's definitely a shortage of those kind of drivers.

High turnover, they need to keep their recruiters/human resources busy and if they can replace current high paid drivers with new lower paid drivers they will.

Focus on your safe driving and not ads on back of trailers.

There's always needs for truck drivers. Some are fired and lose their cdl due to drugs or fatality wrecks.
Most are just playing whack-a-mole. They leave one company then pop up in another company.
There's a constant need to replace those drivers so trucks don't sit empty.
A small minority of truckers just don't like trucking and would rather punch a time clock somewhere and have a predictable routine.

Yes, this mythical "driver shortage" has been reported for at least the last 40 years. It's a ploy by the major carriers to accomplish several things:

    1) Allow the hiring of foreign driver who will work for less money
    2) Permit an increase in the length/weight of truck in the U.S.
    3) Increase the number of drivers sitting idle, waiting for freight, so that companies can ALWAYS have a driver ready to take freight.
    4) Get federal funds for their own company training courses for people who would never take the initiative to get training on their own (hence, that bridge-hit pic above...)
    5) Demand higher rates on freight from shippers (that somehow never get down to the drivers...)
