Got back to the truck last Tuesday. Was up at my hub in Savannah at 7pm. Been doing my deal since then. I had my final MRI done while home. Got the results and sent them up to my surgeon. Got the phone call from her office and scheduled a zoom call with me here in the truck, my wife home and the Dr in Jacksonville for Friday morning. I don’t know which one of you put me on their prayer list, but thank you. The radiologist that looked at and compared the last 2 MRI’s noted no new growth. Based on that and what was said the last time I saw my surgeon, if it stayed the same or grew very little, she would recommend radiation instead of surgery. We shall see on Friday. If it’s radiation, I will have it done immediately. It’s 5 sessions over 2 weeks plus a week off after. 3-6 months later is another MRI to make sure it was successful. With a 95% success rate, I’m feeling pretty good right now. Back to this Linehaul stuff for now. Be safe everyone.

    JB,
Well that's the best news of the day. If it was our thoughts and prayers that's wonderful. I am sure that it had something to do with your character and strength as a great human being. Keep it going strong and I hope for your continued progress and kick some more butt.

Been a very relaxed work week these last 2 weeks. Unfortunately, there’s been a change of plans on the medical front.

    Here goes………..

A week ago yesterday I had a night run to Port Saint Lucie. Got there at 4am dropped the trailer then bobtailed home for my zoom meeting with my lead neurosurgeon. She had the results of the MRI I had done the week before. After comparing the two, going over the images, it was discussed and decided that surgery is the best option instead of radiation. It was discovered that the tumor grew very little but grew in the wrong direction. Now, here is what I have been dealing with. Bear with me.

About 33 years ago, I started to notice I was loosing my hearing in my left ear, about 3 years ago, I went completely deaf in that ear. Right after Christmas I had my yearly physical. I mentioned to my Dr my hearing issue that I never spoke about before. My wife knew about it, but I was doing fine, until recently. So I had an MRI done right after Christmas. It came back with the reason for my deafness. It’s called an “Acoustic Neuroma” and it’s located at the end of my ear canal pressing up against my brain. It’s a benign tumor. Because of the 3 nerves that are around it, hearing is the first thing to go. The other issues can turn into facial paralysis, droopy eye and loss of taste and smell. The growth if not taken care of, could cause much worse issues concerning the brain. So, radiation would take up to a year for the true results to come to light and there’s no guarantee it would be successful. Then if it wasn’t , surgery would then be performed. I would be a year older, then 70+ and the surgery would be more complicated. This past Tuesday I was up in Greensboro and had my final zoom meeting with the second neurosurgeon who will be at the table as well. So after speaking with him, we wholeheartedly decided on the surgery. This is where it got down to the holly sheet moment.

The surgery is taking place on July 18th. We need to be at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville on the 17th to get admitted and have a final MRI done that day. The surgery is 8-10 hours, 2 neurosurgeons, an anesthesiologist and a radiologist. My lead Dr will drill the opening and move the nerve endings out of the way, my second Dr will remove the tumor in its entirety then my first Dr will put the nerves back were they belong. Now, I was wondering, what will they be doing with this actual hole in my head. They take some fatty tissue under my belt line and fill the whole. It heals and eventually hardens like the rest of my head. After surgery, I will be in the ICU for 3 days then in a regular room for about 5 days. Their biggest concern is making sure there’s no infection, and if there is it’s handled immediately. Also, there’s a chance of fluid that surrounds my brain leaking and if it does, it’s handled with medication. So, that’s it. I like numbers, and both Neurosurgeons have told me it’s a 98% recovery rate. Meanwhile, we got a short term patient/family studio for my wife to stay in right on the grounds of the Mayo Clinic. When I’m discharged, I will be staying at the studio apartment with my wife for another week. At that time I will see my Dr’s every other day, and have the staples removed at the end of the week. When they come out, I will be allowed to go home and my regular Dr will look at me once or twice. After 4 weeks at home, we will need to go back to the Mayo Clinic for an MRI and to see how everything is healing. This is the condensed version. Hope I didn’t bore anyone with my story, but talking about it and being able to know I have support helps me through the day. At this stage, I just want this over with. Like my Dr said, when this is done, you’ll have the rest of your life to enjoy. And like my wife said, I now can tell people I had brain surgery. But in all honesty, I am very grateful for the support I’ve had, this has been a very difficult time, but with the help of my wife and my family, my friends and the grace of God I’m in a great place.

Going home next Friday for a week, then when I come back I will work until right before surgery, drive home and spend a day or 2 home, then drive up to Jacksonville.
