I'm just starting out and getting everything in order. I am going to operate my own side dump truck within a 150 air mile radius and completely intrastate. I have no intension of crossing state lines, at least, not at this time. I read a lot about the things that you're exempt from... ELD's, for example... But, what are the things that you DO need? Most I've been able to read about is that I need a DOT number, register with the Clearinghouse, and file a 2290. Am I missing something?

Whatever state your intrastate authority is in should be able to tell you all you need. The feds have a decent guide and there's the OOIDA book too but some things might not match up with your state. Many states tend to mirror the fed process so if you follow either of the guides below you might be fine.

I would highly recommend using a calendar and marking everything you need to do yearly. Many new dates will be acquired as you continue doing business that aren't in the guides so it's imperative you have a solid organizational protocol in place.

Thanks for the response! I do intend to set reminders in my calendar to stay on top of everything. That's the only way to stay on top of it. I'll see what the OOIDA book has to say.

I did reach out to them and they gave me some insight. The "easy button" option would be for them to do all of it for me, but their services seem a little expensive while I'm just starting out. Maybe in a year or two I can budget for that, though.

Some states don't require a Fed Med card for intrastate only travel, like Wis. I think Colorado requires a card no matter what. I think all trucks for hire require a DOT number.

Running intrastate within 150 miles takes a few things off your plate, but don’t let folks fool you, still need the basics locked down.

For O/Os and small fleets hauling local, here’s what you’re really looking at:
    • DOT number (yep, even for intrastate for-hire).
    • 2290 HVUT if your truck’s 55k lbs+.
    • Clearinghouse registration if you or anyone else is driving a CDL vehicle.
    • Medical card: some states waive intrastate, some don’t, so check yours.
    • UCR/IFTA only matter once you start crossing state lines, so you’re safe there for now.
None of that is complicated — just has to be done right so you don’t get flagged.

In Commiefornia, DOT authority is not enforced long as you have only Cali plates. However. Your CA. number must be active.

That's what I was coming up with too. It's good to have multiple points of confirmation with all of this, in my mind. The 3rd party crooks do a good job of mucking up the water so things aren't always as clear as they ought to be. Thanks for the post!

For sure! This place has been a great resource! I'm very thankful for the input I get from everyone. I've been around trucking (off and on) for about a decade, but only a local guy, never OTR. Having the voice of experience to help out has been extremely valuable!
