They want to do away with the 70 rule so they can work more hours for cheap. Same thing with expanding and allowing more split options. There'll be a lot more drivers using that driving tired so they can meet an unreasonable customer expectations or not making near enough running reasonable so they gotta push it. It wasn't the drivers taking a power nap here and there that got us where we're at. It's the ones with no backbone that wouldn't stand up to unreasonable demands and drive way past when they should've pulled over to get some sleep. Overtime exemption being done away with and hourly pay for all time not driving would be better upgrades.

I personally like the ELD. I use recap hours now a lot more. It's a hell of a lot easier for me to keep track of it, because the ELD does it, rather than me having to do it on paper. If paper logs ever did come back though, I would probably still opt to keep the ELD, if I could. There isn't any pressure I feel at anytime to run illegally or anything like that anymore which I often felt when I was running paper logs. This is just my opinion and experience though. I don't fault anyone who hates the ELD, but I don't hate it at all.

I do think the 70 hour limit is kind of silly coupled with the no overtime pay bit of it. I am not sure though if overtime is exempt because of the maximum hours we can legally work, or because its interstate commerce or both. But limiting us to 70 hours, it seems like we should have always been the first ones to be considered to earn overtime pay, in my mind at least. I think with the recent changes to HOS the FMCSA is slowly but surely coming around to see that a lot of the #### they impose is nonsense all together.

Your argument about the split may have held water back in the paper days but with an ELD people won’t be able to cheat it as much. There won’t be any running around and getting work done during one of the breaks with an ELD.

I used the 8/2 split a ton over the last few years and it had nothing to do with load scheduling. In fact I used it more when I was leased to FCC and I easily had 80% drop and hook. It just made my days easier. I liked to shower mid day when places weren’t busy and by the time I’d shower, make lunch, and take the dog for a nice walk it was easy to burn 2 hours. So that’s what I got in the habit of doing.

If they get rid of the 70 hour rule that would eliminate the need for a reset and I’m all for that.

They should put Bill Gates in charge of all of the ELD related stuff. It would work really well then.
